Only thing to deal with matts in pants is weekly brushing. Prevention is best!

Pants should not matt like ears do. I think what you are talking about is just really fat pants.

Best remedy for that:

I recommend a groomer. There is nothing better than a good warm bath and a high velocity blow dry to loosen up the pants. Truly!

I just had my vet cut huge mats from both of Laddie's ears, she said I would have to do this at least once a month, or at least use the comb I bought from her. He hates his ears touched like that, so, I will try the baby powder suggestions. All the suggestions here are interesting, I do not recall any of these problems before with the last Sheltie, guess they are all different.

You are all a wealth of info, I love reading all the threads and learning as I basically am a very new novice in all this.

Would baby powder help with mats in the rear 'pants' area ? I trim him a little back there so he doesn't get ahem dingleberries but he seems to get a little matted on either side.

I don't the baby powder would work there so much. The matts behind ears tend to be oily so the baby loosens those. The fat pants tend to be dryer.

Two things for the pants....

A poop chute.... With a shaver or scisscors cut a 1.5 to 2 inch line done along the tail line.

Fat pants....Unfortunately the only thing for that works is constant brushing. Indy has major fat pants, though thankfully no dingleberries yet. He looks like he weighs about 60 lbs because of his thick coat.

A bath may help loosen the coat, but I'm not a big believer in bathing dogs too often. That's my personal opinion

Only if they start to smell funky or their fur starts feeling oily do I bathe. Even if they get muddy, I generally just hose them down and they are fine after that. The mud
