MDR1 Test

I am looking for an MDR1 test kit so I can get my Karma tested. I already have one for Ellie, but I bought that one from my mom after she bought it on sale. Does anyone know where I can purchase one online or know if there is a clinic where it's being sold cheaper than the normal pricing?

I'd recommend contacting your local Sheltie club - even if they aren't planning a clinic soon, it's a great idea. As Tami said, if they get enough people together, there's a discount. :smile2:
 
Jennifer- I ordered mine from the same place that Tami listed. They emailed me the results. I took mine to the vet to have him help me do it, and I will never make that mistake again. :rolleyes2: He gave it a half hearted attempt and then handed the stuff back to me.

Ok, I have a question and it involves MDR1 so I'll just keep it in this thread.

I want to eventually get both boys CHIC numbers and MDR1/vWD are two of the required tests for shelties. Since these are both tests that the owner collects a sample and mails it in then gets the results back, how do the results get to and recorded with OFA/CHIC?

The MDR1 tests just get emailed back to me from what I can see on their website. The swab only asks for the dogs name doesn't specify registered name or registration number. There is nothing on the form asking for the results to be forwarded to either organization.

I have the swabs for the MDR1 already but I'm going to wait on Reilly until he's microchipped since he has to have a permanent ID for the results to be recorded. I'm not sure why it matters as they are not verifying in any manner that the test and the microchipped dog are one and the same.

If no one knows I'll just email OFA and ask how to get the results to them but it looks like several people here test for these so I figured someone might know.

You can have your MDR1 results recorded? Do you know if you can have them recorded after the results have already been given to you? Is there a way for people to look up tested shelties after they have been recorded (like if somebody had bought a sheltie from the same puppy mill Smudge came from, and they then did an MDR1 test, would I be able to look it up?)?
 
Yes it can be recorded w/OFA because it's a required test for a dog to be issued a CHIC number. Not sure when in the process that has to happen though.

I just can't figure out how I submit my results to OFA since I am just getting an email from the WA university about something I submitted by mail. When Tuckers hips were done they verified it was the dog w/microchip and registration info was included but on MDR1 I could just put Tucker on the label.

There is no verification which seems like it throws a lot of doubt into OFA's results since they have no proof that the posted results are for the same dog.

ETA: The dog would have to be registered I believe and you'd have to know their name or registration number to search it. If all the dogs for example had a kennel name attached you could probably search that as a starting point. You can go to OFFA.org and search results by name or reg number and see the results. If the dog has had OFA/CERF/MDR1/vWD recorded they are given a CHIC number and there is a chic symbol by their name. Also if you go to CHIC's site and go to breed and pick sheltie there is a 'search' right next to the breed name and if you click it you will see all the CHIC reg'd dogs http://www.caninehealthinfo.org/brdreqs.html?breed=SS

I was wondering about the MDR1. :wink2: I hate that the spot to write the dog's name on the MDR1 mouth brushes are so small. I had a horrible time trying to get my pen to write on the crazy thing.

We should email them our suggestions. Give us an MDR1 database, and make it easier to write the dog's names on the brushes (well, not the brush but the little pocket you put the brush in). :lol:
 
Id second checking with your club, ours just had/has one going on. I did Noah and Mia, or you can get together with a few breeders and get the group rate...

I was told a vet has to be the one to do it in order for it to be listed on the OFA website. Since I am having two done at the same time, we would only need two. :)

ToFu Pup, We don't have any local sheltie clubs that are close. There is on in Dallas, and I think Little Rock, but we are at least 2 hours away from both... Same for credible agility and obedience clubs. :(
