Meadow has arrived

she is super cute and glad that she's following the older shelties' lead.

it's nice that you were able to take Jake back- I had to do that with an Aussie that a friend had to send back to the breeder. we just happened to be going to a show in that area so were able to give him a ride.......

It was such a good thing that Jake knows us well. We brought him to our house first, and he was like a different dog - jumping up on the bed, wanting to be with us, running around the yard (marking everything :rolleyes2:) I think he was so quiet and stoic because his owner was such a depressed kind of person - we know how they pick up on that and it affects them. He was fine in the car, I petted and reassured him the whole way. He seemed to remember Jenn and her family within a few minutes and sniffed the other dogs - no drama. They love him a lot and were happy to see him and promised to keep his owner updated on him. She is a wonderful caring breeder.
 
Meadow has been great - hope I'm not speaking too soon but she has done all her peeing outside, pooping also, is exploring everything and seems afraid of nothing. We were moving furniture to cover up our living room carpeting for her future enjoyment, and a picture frame crashed onto the floor near her - she did not seem fazed at all! Eli jumped a mile!

We played a lot with her right before bed, she is loving a braided rope made of soft fleece material. She really got into tugging and we got a couple little growls out of her, LOL. took her out for last potty break around 10:20 PM, then into the crate and fast asleep until 5:11! I woke several times thinking she'd be up and wanting out, but no. Took her out in the chilly morning, she peed and pooped right away, back into the crate after a quick snuggle, she cried for 10 seconds and then slept again until 7 AM! Wow! I hope it continues like this.

Faith and Eli were not too happy with her last night, she approaches and tries to play but is not pestering them. She is quite content to make up her own fun and explore away from us. This morning though, she and Eli finally played a chase game. Meadow did a big play bow and Eli finally took up the invitation.

Faith finally joined in but was more interested in chasing Eli around at top speed.

I am very happy with her temperament. She is pretty brave and confident, does not mind entertaining herself, but does like being held and cuddled. She is in her pen right now tearing up some heavy duty packing paper and having a ball.

Hubby is off delivering Brandie the Sheltie to the rescue group in LA. Will get more photos of Meadow later. :biggrin2:

It has been a busy day. Picked up Jake and gave him a good walk before taking him up to the breeder with us. He was good as gold for us, so glad he's known us for years so wasn't freaked out by it. I cried when we got him but the gentleman giving him up was very stoic.

Finally got up to the breeder's home and spent a good hour and a half chatting with her, her hubby and her wonderful son, who spent last night sleeping in the puppy pen to help socialize the dogs. They also made sure to put down a towel we had left with them to get the littermates' scent on it, that is in Meadow's crate now and she has already taken a nap and voluntarily gone in it to sleep. :yes:

She has a pen in the dining room where she can see into kitchen and living room, seems to work out well, the crate is inside the pen. She has gone outside and pee'd 3 times and did a poop as well. So far so good. She did follow Faith and Eli's lead just now, they pee'd so she did too. Good girl!!

She had so much fun playing in the grass - that was new for her so the first steps were very tentative but then she really got into bunny hopping around - it was so cute. She has a wonderful energy level and temperament, we are just so pleased. She loves being held, but also exploring and farting around too.

Breeder did do her ears, with tape and yarn to hold them up on her head. She thought it would last a good two weeks so I have time to get supplies and figure out how I'm going to do it.

Well she is feeling more comfortable and therefore is more feisty! She has the most fun running around the backyard, loves the grass. Only one pee accident last night and totally our fault. She had been asleep and when she woke up she started playing with a toy so we didn't get her out right away. Other than that she's been great. Slept from 10:30 - 6:30 this morning. Awesome.

The only real issue is eating! She doesn't eat much. The breeder free fed them from those metal water buckets that you can clip to a crate or pen. Now she's getting 1/3 cup three times daily and is only eating a bit out of each meal. This morning I started to get worried - she's so slight that a good stiff wind will blow her away, and I'm worried about hypoglycemia in such a little kid. So after she ate a few kibbles only after fasting all night, I kept sticking my finger in the bowl and rattling the kibble around. She'd come back and eat a bit more. Finally hand fed her, and she would go between my hand and the bowl. Finally got the whole 1/3 cup into her. I know, I know, I don't want her to get used to hand feeding. I'm going to try a saucer at lunch which is flatter than the bowl, and also raise it up since she's used to her food being up at head level. Will also start introducing the Fromm slowly and hopefully she will like that. Anyone have other ideas/hints?

Her poops were getting so small (opposite of Caro's problem!) that I was pretty concerned. But she's very active and seems great in all other respects. Does not get into the vet until April 10 for next shots.

Photo below is her at 3 weeks of age. Interesting how the white starts to get smaller. Her nose still has two pink areas but the breeder said it will fill in by age 1.

Try adding some warm water to the kibble, which enhances the smell. The downside is that it will get mushy if she doesn't eat it, but usually a puppy doesn't mind. If needed, you can add something to the warm water to make it more palatable...a tiny bit of chicken broth or some baby food. Usually after a few days they become eating machines, so you probably don't have to worry but I understand your concern about her not getting enough. I'd definitely try the flatter dish too, that may help! Keep us posted!
