Meant to be Shelties?

Well, Suristo's series of "coincidences" led me to wonder if any others felt their Shelties came to them in a "meant-to-be" kind of way? Here's my story. (I'll try not to be too long-winded!!)

Our first Sheltie Skye was the absolute love of our lives. She was so special that we dithered until she was 13 about bringing in another Sheltie. Ultimately we did get Asta, and it was a great combo. Asta learned from Skye and Skye seemed energized and amused by Asta. We lost Skye at 6 weeks short of 15 years old to kidney failure and even now tears fill my eyes typing this, tho it was 7 years ago. She passed at end of August, and by Christmas, we were still so sad and depressed. I couldn't face the holiday at home so we decided to go up to Yosemite and take Asta with us. On the way we decided to visit the breeder to show her how Asta had turned out.

Everyone asked us if we would get another dog to "replace" Skye which just sent me over the edge. I kept saying NO. So, no ulterior motive in visiting the breeder.

After we visit for a while, and seeing her new boy pup she was keeping, Mona casually said, "You know, we are moving and I am getting out of breeding. I have found homes for all my dogs except two girls. If you are interested, I will give you one or both of them because I know what a great home you are". So... I burst into tears!

DH says - "well can we see them?" She let them out of their crates, and oh my gosh. Here goes Ally, doing flying leaps past the sliding glass door, head turned as if to say, "are you catching this?"

Well, we both were attracted to Ally right away, not so much the other girl. I had to have a day to think about it. Decided on Xmas day, yes Ally had to come live with us. What a roller coaster of emotions!

Here's the weird part... when we picked Ally up, Mona gave us her papers. I glance down, and see her dam's name is (kennel name) California Poppy.

THAT WAS SKYE'S DAM's NAME!! I burst into tears again. So, what are the odds?

Asta and Ally went on to be almost like Siamese twins they are so bonded.

Crazy, eh?

Aw Sharon, what a touching story.

I know neither of mine came at a moment like that, however, Miko has been by my side through so many things that I know I'll be crushed when he goes. Sigh. Maybe my next one will be like Ally.

That is a sweet story, but no, despite having a fairly romantic nature I don't think things are "meant to be". Sometimes it all falls into place and it seems preordained, and sometimes it doesn't. Confirmation bias means we tend to ascribe significance to the times when it does, and discount, forget or simply not notice the times when it doesn't.

Coincidences, even ones with extremely long odds, happen all the time due to the complexity of the world and the amount of actions that take place in it each day, but as humans we have a tendency to see causal patterns where they don't necessarily exist.

Sharon, that's such an awesome story!

Mine's not nearly as romanticized, but interesting all the same.

My husband (boyfriend at the time) didn't want a dog. I managed to convince him that we should go look. We went to a lady's house who had a 7 month old sheltie available named Josie. We met him, and he hid under the table the whole time we were there. The lady kept assuring us that he would "come out of his shell" but when we took him for a walk, he wouldn't even let my husband touch him.

I was so upset...I thought this was a perfect scenario. We decided to go home and think about it.

The next day I sent her an email saying that Josie wasn't for us (the lady sent a very mean email in response). I was so upset. I decided that we should get a puppy so that we would know what we were getting into.

We went to a lady's house a couple weeks later to look at her puppies (they were only 6 weeks). She told me that she had just made the tough decision to rehome one of her older potential show dogs (a 6 month old) that wasn't going to turn out...it was Bentley.

He proceeded to poop on the floor...and we were sold!

Mine is interesting as well! We had decided we wanted to get a dog about three months before we got Hadley. We decided on a Sheltie soon after we determined it was time to get a dog. We had gone to a couple breeders but weren't fancying any of their puppies and were also still on the fence about a puppy as we weren't sure how we felt about having a puppy. I look at Craig's List daily and found someone rehoming a sheltie, well actually SELLING their sheltie. We inquired about her and decided to meet the dog. Upon meeting her, we had a bad vibe from her owner and knew the dog needed out of there. We sat in the car, thought about it, and went to the bank immediately and brought Hadley home with us that day. So, not too interesting.... the interesting part is this lady turned out to be a dog flipper and lied about everything under the sun and Hadley turned out to be pregnant! So, fate? I don't know if I believe in fate myself, but in the end, I couldn't have gotten a better Sheltie. She also gave us five wonderful pupppies, two of which we kept. These dogs look like bichons but herd and bark like shelties. It's a rather entertaining sight. The other three dogs have made thee individuals VERY happy as well. So, we got Hadley and she gave us two fabulous puppies and everything is great now :)

I knew that the first thing I wanted to do after my dh and I got married was get a dog. I started looking shortly after we returned from our honeymoon.

I really wanted a sheltie but my dh wanted something else. We compromised by agreeing on either a miniature schnauzer or a schnoodle.

Eventually I found some schnoodle pups for sale and made an appointment to go see them. I phoned my Mom and told her I made an appointment to see some puppies. Her reply was 'So you saw the ad for the sheltie pups too, eh?'

So despite my dh, I also made an appointment to see the sheltie pups. He was a little disgruntled but I told him he didn't have to come if he didn't want to, that I just wanted to see them and I'd go alone.

To make a long story short, the schnoodle's were being sold by a puppy broker, which made me extremey uncomfortable.

My dh grudgingly came with me to see the shelties after all and it was love at first sight for both of us. It was hard to miss Sadie since she was the only sable in the litter and she pulled at our heart strings immediately.

The timing seemed so strange, that we found her as soon as we started looking, it seemed like it was meant to be. But we KNEW it was meant to be when we found out that Sadie was born the day of our wedding. It couldn't have been more perfect. :smile2:

CJ is our "meant to be" Sheltie.

March, 2007 DH and I went to visit a local breeder with an older puppy to place; my Edan. Edan and I bonded instantly but, in another corner of the room, DH was being entertained by another 6 month old pup; Edan's sister, CJ. She wouldn't leave him alone and I think the two of them played the entire time I was cuddling Edan and talking to the breeder.

When we went to pick up Edan in April (we were having a lot of people at the house for a party and didn't want to scare a new dog just settling in so we waited almost a month to bring Edan home), DH and CJ again played almost the entire time.

Every time we'd visit the breeder (she puppysits for us when we travel and can't take the dogs), DH and CJ would cuddle and play. As they dogs grew up, CJ would curl up in DH's lap and just stay there to be pet and cooed over. She wouldn't even stay in the breeder's lap for long periods of time. We also found out that when we were visiting, we (specifically DH) was the ONLY person CJ would stay in the house for and visit with. Anyone else she'd be out in the yard running the fence or laying down in the grass.

When Edan and CJ were 2 years old, about 6 months after we had to say goodbye to our Finnish Spitz, we approached the breeder and asked her if we could have the first opportunity to bring CJ home IF she ever needed to find a forever home for her. She couldn't promise it was ever going to happen but we'd be first on the list for any of her/CJ's 'pet' puppies since, at the time, the plan was to breed CJ.

At the end of 2009 that all changed when it appeared the CJ skipped a heat cycle and there was a fear she was infertile. A few months after that, Edan's and CJ's grand-dam had to be PTS from complications due to old age. This left my breeder emotionally distraught because their grand-dam was her Heart Dog. CJ and their half-sister were the only two breedable dogs left from that line and their half-sis was a Sable Merle so getting a full Sable, what my breeder wanted for her line, was difficult. So, she had a Sable Merle she couldn't guarantee a Sable pup from and a possibly infertile CJ.

After much soul searching, in April 2010 our breeder made the tough decision to rehome CJ rather than breeder her. We got to bring her home for a 2 week trial to see if she and Edan could get along OK. They got along GREAT!!!

After the 2 weeks, our breeder changed her mind about spaying CJ and wanted to keep her in tact in case the breeding of her Sable Merle didn't produce a Sable pup. HOWEVER we could keep CJ as a co-ownership and when she went in heat we had to take her down to the breeders house. This decision was aided by the lack luster greeting CJ gave her when she saw her.

So, May 2010 CJ was ours. She went into heat in October and we learned that our breeder realized, since she was caught off guard by CJ's cycle starting and having just purchased a Sable puppy to restart her line, that she really wanted to breed CJ for sentimental reasons and not because she was a good representation of the breed standard (CJ has a very small head). With that realization came our full ownership of CJ.

CJ STILL camps out on DH's lap and follows him around. She loves working with him in agility and has DH wrapped around her cute white paw.

CJ's the dog that was meant to be for us. She 'chose' DH when she was 6 months old and the bond never diminished during the years of only seeing one another a few times a year. That bond is visible daily between the two of them.

I so believe with all my heart, that my meeting Elaine on FaceBook was just meant to be.Elaine has not posted in some time, but she is a fantastic gal.

One evening while on FaceBook,I was playing FarmTown, and Elaine hired me to tend to her farm. While I was working on her farm,we got to messaging about family,kids,dogs..just a really nice conversation.

During the coversation I told Elaine it has always been a dream of mine to own a shetland sheepdog, but did not know where or even how to go about finding puppies.
Well conversation went from one thing to another, and she mentioned sheltie forums, and also she knew of someone in NC that had a new litter. (Janet,in Weaverville NC)

Well once I registered here,I have not looked back.It was just meant to be.Trapp joined our family, and he is my special heart dog.I love him so very much.I have Elaine to thank, and I know it was just meant to be.

So in a 1-1/2 we now have 3 shelties, and they are the loves of our life.Jasper joined us,4 months after Trapp came home, and recently Mia.

Mia,I have Stacey here to thank for posting a link.I want to thank her here publically,as Mia has been a joy & love to complete the French household.so thank you!
