Wow, I can't believe how fixated some people are on looks! We consider our pets to be part of the family and some I've felt extremely close to, but after they've passed I've never considered trying to replace them with carbon copies.

When we went to look at our first sheltie (Sadie), we knew that we'd prefer a sable, but we didn't base our decision purely on looks. We consider personality to be so much more important.
 
When I was looking for a Sheltie and was asked what color I wanted, my answer was 'I'd prefer a sable but I'm more interested in the dog's personality than the color'.

Some folks know what they want, I guess.
 
I think most people have a sex, size, color, color pattern, etc preference. I sure do. However for me, personality and temperament comes before any physical traits. It would be wonderful if I can find a puppy with the right temperament and is also the sex, size and I color I prefer, but the odds on that are slim. I would definitely pick a puppy, who is not my first choice sex, color, etc. if he/she has the perfect temperament for me.

This person may not know that there is no such thing as a miniature sheltie or what the standard is for a sheltie, but that doesnt mean they wouldnt make as good of a home as someone who is educated on shelties. My parents are perfect examples of that. They have been long time sheltie owners and couldnt tell you anything other then the obvious about them..i dont even think they know that they come in more colors then just sable. But they have always been able to provide a wonderful home for them with all the care they need and there puppies have always been well socialized, loved, and spoiled.:yes:

Well, Cran and Dixie have full white collars- both are too smart for their own good :wink2: actually Cran probably has the collar and half the shirt :lol:
Callie has about a half a collar- she also can be way too smart.
I'm pretty sure there will be no carbon copy of the Cranman- he's one of a kind :yes:

Definitely agree with this - when I went looking for my dobe, I was "set" on getting a black male. I picked (and was picked by), a red female - best girl for me then. Now though, I'm hoping for a blue merle female sheltie, and would be very happy to find that, or a tri black, bi-black, etc., with the right personality and temperament. But size? in size would be nice, lol.

Inquiring minds want to know - what does not too tall and not too small mean? :lol:
 
I admit, I was one that wanted a sable puppy with a blaze on his face. Male please. I got a sable puppy (see photo), who had a slight blaze (dot) and was male. And a few years later, he was no longer really "sable" in my mind (aka light colored) and his blaze on his face was gone gone gone.

And Koji, I took regardless of his personality, looks, etc. So weird. Neither one of my boys have a white blaze. Miko collar doesn't go all the way around (he says he's no dummy either) and Koji's does. I honestly didn't realize the white tip was part of the standard until I read about it in.....Sheltie Talk! LOL.

Loved the comment of "not too small, not too big". It's like when my breeder says, "you like them small" and I keep thinking...but Miko is 15.5" and Koji is 17.5". They're not small....then I'm wondering if she meant build (both their builds are "small"). Hmm.....

And lastly, I admit, I'd still be picky about color and markings to a point. Granted, now that I have more than one dog, I'd see if the dog would fit in with the other two (or 1), or if I'm looking for a performance dog, I'd look for those qualities. But since my two were pets first and foremost, I honestly didn't care what they were like, I knew I'd love them anyways.

So do I, and I don't think there is anything wrong with that. I'm not so much picky about colors (I like them all except bi black). I don't think there is anything wrong with having a perference. If you are paying for the dog, and you can plan to have the dog for at least 15 years, then why not get what you want? If you have to wait a little longer for the right dog in the color or markings you want then it's the price you pay for being picky. :lol:

I wanted a collie. I really, really wanted a collie after Gizmo died. I ended up with Smudge. So sometimes what we think we want isn't always what we really want anyway.

I don't really so much care about color for my next dog, but I do want a girl. If I had to wait several different litters before that happened it would not bother me.
