Monty is coughing/choking almost none stop

Oh no! This must be so hard for you to watch!! Is he able to drink/swallow OK? Both the KC and collapsing trachea came to mind, but it could be as random as a swallowed plant sticker/burr. Poor Monty. Definitely keep an eye on his gum color.

Elijah did this one night also - he ran to us from another room and was swallowing, swallowing, making funny sounds, very upset. I looked down his throat and couldn't see anything (he'd been fast asleep so couldn't have gotten into anything). I finally did a finger sweep deep in his throat and that instantly cured him. It was almost like his epiglottis got stuck (it covers the trachea when you swallow so you don't inhale food/liquids) and I unstuck it. But if there's any chance it's a foreign body you don't want to do that as you can lodge it deeper and cut off his airway. Keep us posted and don't be shy about calling your vet!!!

Is there any chance he swallowed something that's stuck, Darren? Could be anything, even a piece of food. Try giving him something smooth (I think Lisa mentioned honey), you can also try a spoonful of yogurt (no xylitol), ice cream or plain pumpkin which I've used for this type of thing. With the choking at the end, I don't know if it would be kennel cough. I'd suggest 25 mg of benadryl if it might be an allergen but I wouldn't want to try anything like that without seeing the vet at this point. Honestly, if I were you I'd get him to the vet at the earliest opportunity. It's been going on for too long.

Sending many good thoughts and gentle pats to poor Monty and hugs to you!

I managed to get a video halfway through when he just did it again. Typical though he didn't do the big gag on the end this time. This is the last 10 secs or so, it goes on for about a minute each time.

Can you forward this video to the vet and reinforce how long it has been going on?
My heart goes out to you both!
I hope the vet gets you in soon.

Thanks Sharon/Ann, I've had a look in his mouth/throat and I can't see anything. He's drinking his milk normally and he ate his breakfast this morning (which I mashed up to be safe). I've just tried some honey and he has started doing it again so it doesn't look like that will work.

I usually have 2 vets, 1 is open 24hrs and the other is his regular 'office hours' vet. The 24hr vet is currently closed due to the virus so it's only my normal vet. He'll do out of hours in severe emergencies if things get worse but he's now closed until tomorrow.
Gloria - I said I'd email a video but at the minute he's not interested until it has been ongoing for 24hrs or Monty gets worse. I can't wait to actually see him 'after 24hrs', I'll be letting him know personally how unhappy I am with the service.

I know what you mean about the gagging sound he makes. I came across this website (I actually used some of these remedies with Piper and his duration was relatively short, less than 10 days) for home remedies for Kennel Cough...https://www.top10homeremedies.com/p...h in Dogs 1,Soup. ... 10 Keep the Air Moist.
Do you have a vaporizer you could use? Try keeping him in one room (I found the vaporizer worked better this way) and lots of liquids.
If it is KC there's really nothing the vet can do for it, you just have to keep him comfortable and relatively quiet. Hard to do I know, broke my heart seeing Piper (and Riley, because he caught it from him too) coughing and so uncomfortable but these things really did help.

It must be pure torture hearing this every 5 minutes :(
I would be very unhappy about the vet, too!
mine will see Gavin for issues outside of regular health checkups....and I am tempted to push it a bit.
He has a probably histiocytoma I want checked out.

After watching your video I am reminded Brooke did this occasionally, and at the end it sounded like she was trying to gak up a hairball like a cat. Very distressing sound. Hers was actually allergy related it turned out. It's still disturbing to watch happen. Not a bad idea to give Mr. B a wash just in case something was picked up. Or trade out the back up one you have.
