Monty is coughing/choking almost none stop

Thanks everyone, Monty has the best godparents ever
Still no change and it has been about an hour since he had the Benadryl, hopefully it just needs more time. He's just laying down now through his coughing fits now as I think he's tired himself out. He doesn't seem to be working himself into a panic anymore which is a plus We're onto backup Mr Broccoli No2 as well, Monty just had an accident and pee'd while he was laying down. I'll keep an eye on him and see how he goes, I don't think he's getting any worse, just exhausted.

Even if he recovers over night he'll be going to the vets tomorrow even if I have to knock the door down.

Try giving him the mixture of honey and lemon juice (2 tsp honey mixed with 1 tsp lemon juice), it'll help soothe his throats and maybe help the coughing. Can you use a vaporizer or maybe get a hot shower going so it gets all steamy in there and then sit in there with him? Maybe some chicken broth (salt free if you have), he probably isn't eating right now either or drinking much.
I was hoping the antihistamine would help, if not it may help him sleep (a side effect).
I know what your going through, when Piper had Kennel Cough it was constant and I worried so much about him!

Thanks Sheep.

Ahh thanks for the reminder Lisa, my brains fried at the minute lol. I don't have a vaporizer but the shower idea is worth a try, I'll carry him up there now and give it a go. He's liking the honey/lemon so it must be helping, he's still drinking his milk if I bring the bowl to him. He better not be thinking I'll be bringing his bowls to him when he's better

I know what you mean, it's so frustrating not being able to help them.

Yes, the antihistamine will make him tired and maybe the side effect helps to calm him a bit. Or as you say he is just exhausted...

I would break down the doors too! Then use one to knock some sense into that vet! Oh, sorry... I just get worked up since I am a helicopter mom! When my kids are sick you need to see them NOW!

Oh, no! Poor Monty!! I hope he feels better soon!!

I agree, at this point I would be knocking the door down to get to the vet. You shouldn’t have to wait 24 hours! My vet always allows walk ins, but you have to pay more.

Have you/can you take his temperature?

When Kip had his bad upset tummy (probably caused by a blockage) it started with coughing and gagging for a few hours, then turned into vomiting.

My first Sheltie, Noel, had a coughing episode plus very high fever when she was 13. Scared me to death because of her age. It was the weekend and the vet couldn’t see her until the next day. The only thing they could find was that she had swallowed a small wire (showed up on x ray), and that had possibly scratched her throat. She was on antibiotics for awhile, but the wire passed without surgery.

Thanks Sheep.

Bad part is the milk might be aggravating it. Diary products can cause phlegm

Thanks for the tip sheep, it's a tricky one as he will not touch water. I'll give broth a shot and see if it helps as well.

Margi, the other vet that is near me is closed due to the virus, this one is open but only for 'serious' issues. I may be out of touch but I would have thought breathing problems were serious!
I've sat with the shower on for an hour and it didn't help BUT just after I carried him out and put him on the bed with Broccoli he has gone to sleep!! His breathing is really heavy and strained but he's sleeping. Hopefully we can get some sleep and off to the vets in the morning! Thanks for all so much for the support/help, you've stopped me from going crazy with stress tonight :hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs
