Monty is coughing/choking almost none stop

Thanks again everyone, my brain is working overtime so it has been great just to be able to come here and 'talk'.
Sharon I think Monty could cope without his family lol, I just feel he'll be finding it really hard without Mr Broccoli. I explained it is his security blanket and they are inseperable, even said I'd bring in a new one still wrapped but it's not allowed in with him either.
Yes I had a phone call before they closed to give me an update. He is on steriods, I think they said prednesone or something like that.

Margi - I actually don't know about the heart worm, I'd assume they would have checked everything and he got all his shots the day after I got him so he's up to date. He all gets a monthly pill for fleas, ticks and I'm sure it says heartworm as well.

I am just so sorry for poor Monty without his Mr B:(:( It seems unreasonable not to let Monty keep a new Mr B with him.

Kip sends get well soon wishes to Monty! We are all rooting for him to get better ASAP!

My vet clinic requires yearly heartworm tests even though the dogs are on heartworm prevention all year. It’s a simple blood test. Coughing and weakness can be signs of heartworm.

That's what I had heard as well, Elei, so I thought I'd ask...sadly sometimes we have to advocate and ask the doctors what should be simple stuff. This goes for dogs and people, as any one with a family member in hospital has probably found out!

I just checked online and got:

"Heartworms
are thankfully not found in the UK, but are a serious risk for dogs that travel abroad. Transmitted by mosquitos, these parasites can cause serious illness and even death, so precautions should be taken for any dogs who leave the UK"

That may explain why it has not been mentioned by the vet.

I'm just curious if this 24 hour policy is an outcome of the Covid crisis? I bet there would be newspapers that'd be interested in doing a story on this shameful policy and this would probably have a greater effect than getting angry at this vet.
It's something you could occupy yourself with Darren while you wait for Monty to come home. I'd call some papers and ask them about this, public interest stories that people would be very interested in. Don't get mad, get even.
