Monty is coughing/choking almost none stop

Lisa, that's a great idea. I'm going to weigh up my options after all this and see how we feel. They apologised today for not seeing him sooner (bit late now). Due to Covid and the other vets being closed they have a backlog so can only see emergencies. Apparantly coughing choking none stop can be common and only an emergency if it goes on more than a day.....

Phoebe and I are following you and little Monty too. Could he have aspirated something?

Thank you, I've been asked if he could have inhaled vomit or something but not to my knowledge. It's annoying as there has to be something I've missed.

Little Monty has not improved over night so can't come home today. He's still stable but critical if that makes sense. He has not responded to any medication yet and still can't breathe on his own...ugh super stressed!
They are going to up his medication today and flush/replace his fluids etc. They seem pretty confident that we should see improvements over the next 24hrs.

Please, please, please, keep us posted on how he does today! This is beyond stressful that he is not responding to treatments they are providing. Have the scoped his throat? I am still not convinced that something might be lodged there. I know I am grabbing at straws as we all are in the desperate hope that Monty rallies. Is the oxygen helping his breathing at least? Thanks for updating us and you have to be so worried. Wanting him to be home and knowing the stress he must be under. Again, keep us posted as time permits.

Darren, you must be beside yourself with worry. I'm so sorry Monty is going through this. It's good news that he's stable and I hope today's news is that he's improving. Don't beat yourself up, you probably didn't miss anything. If something stung him you wouldn't know. And they're always grabbing blades of plants to chew so that could be it too. What matters is that he gets better and home to you.

Thanks so much for keeping us posted. We are all thinking about you and Monty and praying for good news. Sending you and the girls virtual hugs.

I agree it’s so stressful for the wee guy it’s a shame you can’t let him have his Mr. B. With him for comfort. My senior Shih Tzu was in for 4 nights (totally different situation), but he had his blanket with him. Here’s hoping for good news soon we are all holding you, the girls and our buddy Monty in our thoughts and prayers.

Don't beat yourself up on missing something. Likely this is just a random virus that occurs and really got the poor guy. The compounding was him getting as bad as he did before treatment started. Even on that I can see the vets side a bit (though he is MONTY!) as being a only choice available and likely short handed.... No matter how bad they do try to remember the other choices were available to do nothing as they weren't there.

They did a complete blood-work up right? Did you get a copy of it emailed to you? Maybe bring up heartworm just to see if he was tested? Takes a while for it to become a problem so his exposure would have been months and months ago. And while there shouldn't be heartworm where you are, with people traveling, who knows...

Many prayers going out to you guys...

Damn, this was not the news I hoped to read this morning.
Turning this into a teaching moment for myself--if you want your dog to be seen ASAP the key words are labored breathing, not coughing.
Yeah I was wondering about bloodwork too--surely they did some??

NOT the news I was hoping to see this morning. Wondering also if there is something caught in his throat past where you can see. I would have thought he'd be improved by today. Poor little tyke must be so confused and sad without Mr. B. It's also entirely possible he could have aspirated something that started the pneumonia as well. The lungs don't take kindly to foreign material of any type. This is when it is so frustrating that they can't talk.

I'm sending lots of healing energy thoughts his way, Darren, I know you must be a bundle of nerves. Please know how much we all care and are pulling for Monty to get back home. :hugs
