More evidence that shelties are just to darn smart

We like to leave the front door open. We have one of those forever full glass storm doors. Amber loves to sit/lay there and be the block captain. From my chair I can see down the block and see the mail man coming. So I will tell my wife that the mail man is coming so she can close the door. Amber gets very upset when she can't greet him.
It didn't long for her to know what I was telling my wife and she would start twirling and barking and running to another room so she could look out the window to see him. So I started to say pony express. HA about the third time she knew that meant mail man. So I started to spell it and she learned how to spell mail man. Then I started to say here and she learned that meant mail man too. So I would spell H E R E,yep you guessed it she is a good speller.

Well, I'd suggest studying sign language, but we all know that will end up with you trying to sign behind her back and then she will know again, her friend is on his way! Bark bark bark :hide

Seriously, she's pretty smart to keep up with the frequent name changes.

I like to run distance with my two shelties in the morning. Usually, its an out and back route, with a turn around when we are halfway through the run. Depending on the particular day, the turnaround can happen at 2.5 miles, 3 miles or more on the "long run" day. Aspen loves to anticipate the turnaround. No matter what route we are on, she turns around at the exact distance. It is really freaky. Then she likes to zoom and bark and generally show off that she got the distance right! Smarty pants!

I've lost track of how many euphemisms we've used to refer to Olive's bathroom breaks. Right now we have to say something along the lines of "When was she last on grass?" which totally makes sense coming from the horse world but I also realize it sounds like our dog is a stoner!

:yuckyuck Too hilarious!!!

We have one of those doors too -- UPS man and FedEx man are issues. I am running out of words involving delivering, packages, arrivals, brown truck, etc. etc.

And then, of course, we are having trouble with "frozen dairy beverage dessert" getting them all riled up too.

Dickens loves to get visits from his little Schipperke friend Callie. All we need do is mention "Callie," "Schipperke," "little friend," "little black dog," "Michelle," or "visit" and he parks himself by the front door and waits for her, even if she's not expected for another week!

I love all of these antics done by all the smart little fur kids. I tried many of the same things with all the same results that you are experiencing. I don't know about the rest of you, but I was really starting to feel pretty embarrassed that I couldn't beat my little Bambi at the game. But keep trying, they never tire of the game.

I wonder if you can set up some phone calls between them on those days when he thinks she's on her way but isn't? No easy way to translate but it could be a fun experiment. At your house, not mine :wink2:.
