I use a mat breaker (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=843) to take out their undercoat (for shows only, though.)

I have a dog park horror story. There was this dog prancing up to the gate. I called it immediately, "Sheltie!" DH didn't think so because it was an odd shape. I stood by my theory. It turns out that he was a Sheltie who had been shaved! I couldn't help myself and I asked why? They said it was a recommendation from their groomer. I explained about the undercoat being insulating and cooling them down and the risk of sunburn (we're in Florida for goodness sakes).
They seemed mildly concerned. They were in love with Duncan's color because they DIDN'T KNOW SHELTIES CAME IN SABLE. Then, they asked me if I wanted to breed Duncan or Abbie. I (as calmly as I could muster) told them they were neutered/spayed, undersized/oversized, and hadn't been health tested. They mused about health testing and said 'I guess that's the next step to getting our boy bred.' I could have thrown up.
Anyway, before I left, they asked if I CUT a V into the front of my dogs' ruff. Given, Duncan is kind of scraggly because he is growing in his coat, but seriously?!?!

wow................. people who don't know that shelties come in sable and they have a sheltie??????????![]()

We need to think of these incidents as wonderful opportunities to educate.
