My groomer shaved my Sheltie!!!!!

WoW now I'm worried since Gypsy's hasn't grown back yet. She basically cut most of the white tip off. The vet tech shaved the front of her neck and some of her chest to draw blood when she had her surgery a couple months ago and that hasn't come back either but where they shaved her back to remove a lump has. Which I think is odd.

I'm sure that like most everything else, every dog has a different growth rate.

Argh! I hate when techs do that. I've seen dogs take up to 6 months for the hair to grow back all the way. The collar rubs up and down in that area and slows the hair growth. Which is why I don't allow my techs to shave hair to draw blood. I know shelties are hard but still. I have a running joke at the clinic when they are hiring someone that the first person to successful draw blood from Justice's juglar vein is hired. Everyone runs the other way and I get No No Dr., the honor is all yours.

However, if it is not growing back at all a check into thyroid function is the first thing I look at. Steriod use can stun hair growth and other there are other metabolic diseases that can effect hair growth as well.

I did have her thyroid checked last fall because she is overweight and doesn't eat much but was thinking of having it rechecked. She is also on estradiol for incontinence so I don't know if the weightgain is related to that.
I did mention to the vet yesterday about the hair there not coming back yet and he told me sometimes they don't regrow it. I would hate for this to be the case she had such a beautiful coat prior to all this. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I did start using Derma-iox skin sooth and repair about a month ago so I am hoping this helps her. It is a vetinox product have you ever heard of them? They are homeopathic products.

I trimmed my landlords dog when I first moved in, and that hair never regrew (it's a good thing I did a good job!). Turns out she had adrenal tumors that were mimicking Cushings. She was also tubby, lethargic, and had thin hair (signs of Cushings).

Just got Maddie back from the groomer - I took her for the first time last month, and she looked great. This month, I said do the same, but don't shave her tummy (her nipples got irritated). Well....the groomer decided that Maddie didn't need her frill "that ruff was out of control!", and also trimmed her tail STRAIGHT ACROSS.

Guess who is going to be buying a few more grooming tools and doing it herself from now on.

Oh my gosh - how awful!!!!!!!! I can't believe they did that! But the good news is that it will grow back

I think there needs to be a LONG discussion with any groomer on HOW a sheltie should look. The horror stories are too many. I don't shave, I clip, but only the underpants and the derriere and the long leg fur. They look puppy cut. Because they get so hot. It all grows back easily. I would NEVER touch the ruff or on their backs. But I do brush and brush to get the down out so they aren't so coated in spring and summer. I don't get why groomers get so zealous in their efforts on shelties.
