Pics coming! Ok now that is out of the way...

I got an 8 wk old girl last night named Clara. She is the tiniest most precious little puppy. So far we are trying to crate train her and only bring her out of it when we can play with her and watch her like crazy. She's about 50/50 already with going potty outside.

I have a question about potty training: We are taking her out 30 mins after food and then every few hours after. Would it be good to leave a little piece of her poop where we are taking her to potty (its a wooded area behind our apt) in hopes that she will remember that that is where she needs to relieve her self. It's getting cold here and I have to zip her in my jacket on the way back.

She gets so excited about food that she eats with one of her hind legs in the air cuz she has her face so far in the bowl!

Can a few people respond and let me know about how long it took their new puppies to sleep through the night? She woke up at least 3-4 times last night and it really hurt my heart to hear her whimper so I spent most of the night laying in bed waiting to hear her so I could go sit on the floor outside.
 
Congrats on the new puppy!!... I can't wait to see photos.

Miko was already 11wks old when we got him, so it's hard to compare how long he was sleeping at night vs. an 8wk old pup. However, the 1st night he woke up a few times. I took him out to potty the first time... once I knew that his whining was nothing to do with needing to potty, then I could ignore him. Of course it broke my heart... but after 2 nights of restlesness, we haven't had a problem since.

Sca was almost immediate. One thing was he slept in a crate in my room and had a glove he confiscated from the breeders daughter. If you have something from them put it in with him. Of course the glove was only interesting for a couple of weeks then he wanted his/my smell since this is home.
 
I would think an 8 week old puppy is going to wake up,depending on what at night it is put down for the night.I would easily expect no less than 2-3 times.Every puppy is differant.Each puppy digests food differantly,each drinks differant amounts of water before retireing for bed.

I feed early here for that reason,it gives the system plenty of time to digest.I never crated for the night,if I knew they had not done thier business,cause they will just wake you up to go.

I never held thier water from them,but I do know some pups cannot be givin water after a certain time.

When ours were 9-10 weeks old,when they first came home,last call here was at 10-11pm.

Jasper never woke up in the night to potty,dont know why,but he was an all night sleeper from day one of being home.

Trapp was my challange,and I did fall in the pitfall even when he was 4-5 months old,to hop out of bed to potty him in the night,when he let a whimper out.

Whimpering & crying to go out when they are weeks old,is a reason to not ignore the potty cry.I never hesitated.

But it soon becaime really old for me,to be taking Trapp out of his crate at ungodly hours,when I knew fully well,if he slept thru a night here and there,then decided it was fun to play at 3-4am.

And I fell for the "ha-ha joke is on mom,lets see how long she will play" routine...I knew he thought he had complete control over my sleeping hours.

So I nipped it in the bud,after some here thought...hE hAS gOT YOU sNOwED!:rolleyes2: And ya know everyone was right.

One night of me not hopping out of bed,was a cure all for Trapp's playtime.
 
Bella and Dodger both slept through the night the day i got them. Both times I had the breeder give me a toy with sibs and mom's scent. Put a soft warm cuddly toy in with her..I know that must be heartbreaking but it will pass

I did keep a bit of poop where i wanted Bella to go, she did great right away, I have had Dodger it will be 3 weeks monday but he is already 12 weeks old and got a bit of a late start, so its slow going and we have more accidents because he and Bella get to playing and i am bad about not crating him as i should but as of yesterday he has started going to the door now. I always take water away at 8pm and bed at 9

It sounds like you are doing great.



This may seem anal but i kept a journal the first week or so, so that i could begin to see her pattern and it helped me alot. something like this

6:00 am wake/potty outside pee and poop
6:15 ate 1/4 cup played 30 minutes
6:45 crate/nap
9:00 potty pee pee outside/play 30 minutes (oops pooped on kitchen floor)
crate/nap
10:00 potty outside/train for 10 (1/8 cup kibble) played hard for 30 minutes potty outside

etc.....etc.....

Thanks for the input all :) I've got a pretty good memory for how long its been since she had food or was walked. It is so freaking cold and rainy this weekend that I feel bad taking her outside cuz its gross but she likes getting in the coat and is sleeping a lot so we've been napping with her.

I had ordered a ton of stuff earlier this week from amazon (treats, kongs, rope toy) and everything that wasn't important (larger bed and puppy shampoo) came on time but the good stuff didn't so we had to wear her out and sneak out to Target while she slept to buy some toys. The peanut butter flavored bone is odd to say the least but she loves it.

Just a little anxious and nervous about having my first ever puppy that I'm truly responsible for. Lots of questions at the vet on monday!

You are going to be a great puppy mom i can tell by your concern and quest for learning all you can and finding this forum to talk with other sheltie moms and dads. There are a lot of very knowlegable people on here from breeders to vets and and trainers to just us furkid lovin regular joes like me
 
Congratulations!!! We put Layla's crate right next to my bed. I'd take her out at 0500 when I got up -- worked swell:):biggrin2:
 
My puppies slept through the night at eight weeks old. Just don't give them any water about three hours before you go to bed and take them out about every hour within that three hour time frame and you should be fine.
 
Both pups sleep in our bedroom, first in crate and Che in his bed. Both slept 6 solid hours since the day 1. Last feed is 7 pm, last drink 8 pm or so last potty 10 pm or so.
Both my pups had somethings with mother/ littermates scent in their crate. Otherwise I put my worn clothing over the crate to give them my scent nearby after couple of days.
Do yourself a favor and teach your girl to potty on cue word, it takes Leo just about few seconds to do his business since he can differentiate whether we are going for walk or just to potty. Saves me time standing in cold wind:wink2:
While awake, I took Leo out just about every 40 minutes to 1 hour. I do not teach them to let me know when to go. The smaller the puppy the smaller the bladder. Che could hold like 8 hrs during the night almost at 8 weeks but he was a big boy to begin with.
Tie your pup to you with another leash around your waist when you not directly watching her. It will help you in long run for your girl to learn your body moves and you to be aware when she starts sniffing the ground. Taking to same spot same route same door to potty really helps. Do not have to leave poop there, smell will linger.
