my Shelly the Sheltie ALMOST became a Sheltie Angel... ALMOST!

Shelly the sheltie became VERY sick. She is 14 1/2 and her day is simple, she gets up when I get up, she follows to the bathroom where she lays outside the door, then she goes to the kitchen where she lays down while I fix breakfast. If I go to the garage, she will HOWL (like a HOUND!!) at the door until I invite her into the garage. If I'm in the yard, she is in the yard, laying in the shade. Wherever I go, she is nearby... that was, until last week.

She did not want to leave the bedroom, she would snap at the daucshund if he got too close (unheard of!!) she would snap at Shadow the sheltie if he got too close.

Then she started peeing in the house - we have 4 dogs (two are shelties) and we have a doggie door, so peeing in the house is not common.

Then she wanted to sleep... ok, she is an old dog.

I took her to the vet. My wife prepared the kids for my return if I came home alone.

At the vet, they discovered that she had an abnormal white count. X-rays revealed a nasty infection in the uterus. My RN wife knows the correct medical name for the problem, but Shelly had not been spayed. It was decided that she under go surgery -- $1000.00 later...

I have a very happy girl, I expect her to be under my feet for several more years. She looks funny with her "poodle cut" on her left leg - for the IV, a sheared belly, and missing fur on her neck. I sure hope her fur grows back before winter!

I think that she knows that she would not have survived the night had I not taken her to the vet.

You are so lucky you caught it in time! If it spread to the abdomen, she would not be here with you now. My good friend's sheltie died due to a peritoneal infection, so I know how fast it spreads. You are very, very lucky. Prayers for a speedy recovery coming Shelly's way!

What a relief. But I bet she is worth the $1000.

My 2.5yr old sheltie has almost the same day as your girl - right down to the howling!

Kudos to you for being an alert owner. You caught the problem in time and saved Shelly's life. Hopefully she will make a full recovery.

That was close....it's a good thing you were so attuned to her behavior that you KNEW something was seriously wrong.

What a relief and MANY more good years for Shelly!

Prayers for Shelly's quick recovery.

Thank you for being alert owners. Shelly thanks you as well. Noticing these changes shows how caring and keenly aware you are to your furkids! Please keep us updated on her healing.

I'm so sorry to hear of Shelly's health emergency! What a terrible scare!

Here's hoping that she has a speedy and uncomplicated recovery

oh no, pyometra, My little Rachie had this when she came to me and I almost lost her. She was a 5 year old intact female when she came to me. After a nearly 2000.00 surgery she did survive, but the infection left holes in her little kidneys. She was monitored regularly after this, but I lost her to the resulting kidney failure from the mess the infection left behind . Rachie was 9.5

Shelties do talk and you listened. You really should be so proud of yourself, you was aware and took action. Great home, wonderful dad.

Prayers for a fast recovery
