Shelly the sheltie became VERY sick. She is 14 1/2 and her day is simple, she gets up when I get up, she follows to the bathroom where she lays outside the door, then she goes to the kitchen where she lays down while I fix breakfast. If I go to the garage, she will HOWL (like a HOUND!!) at the door until I invite her into the garage. If I'm in the yard, she is in the yard, laying in the shade. Wherever I go, she is nearby... that was, until last week.
She did not want to leave the bedroom, she would snap at the daucshund if he got too close (unheard of!!) she would snap at Shadow the sheltie if he got too close.
Then she started peeing in the house - we have 4 dogs (two are shelties) and we have a doggie door, so peeing in the house is not common.
Then she wanted to sleep... ok, she is an old dog.
I took her to the vet. My wife prepared the kids for my return if I came home alone.
At the vet, they discovered that she had an abnormal white count. X-rays revealed a nasty infection in the uterus. My RN wife knows the correct medical name for the problem, but Shelly had not been spayed. It was decided that she under go surgery -- $1000.00 later...
I have a very happy girl, I expect her to be under my feet for several more years. She looks funny with her "poodle cut" on her left leg - for the IV, a sheared belly, and missing fur on her neck. I sure hope her fur grows back before winter!
I think that she knows that she would not have survived the night had I not taken her to the vet.
