My Sheltie got shaved!:(

Please help!
We took our Sheltie to the groomer and he decided to shave him!!
we asked him to just bath and trim his hair.When we went to pick him up he has about an inch of hair.
He looks like a fuzzy little puppy.
The groomer left his head hair and tail long but everything else is short.
I am devastated.
Please tell me it will grow back.....how long!?
I cried all the way home from the groomers.
What can I do to make it grow faster?
Will it be a fuzzy Afro when it's growing? Will it ever be long again?
 
Thankfully he wasn't fully shaved right down to his skin...his coat will grow back and will look normal again. I don't know of anything that will actually force the coat to grow in faster...just make sure his food is top quality...and exercise is important too.

Trini is right. His hair will grow back and he will look just fine. It will take about 6 months, maybe less depending on his age and how fast coats grow in his line. Daily brushing will help too; it will stimulate his skin. Always spritz lightly with water when you brush him, and use a pin brush.

Most groomers don't know how to do Shelties, and this is a common complaint. I would complain to the grooming facility about a groomer who obviously doesn't know the breed and didn't follow your instructions. At the very least, you should get a refund.

I always suggest that people research groomers before taking a Sheltie to one. A Sheltie breeder or a local Sheltie club can usually give you a recommendation. Most all-purpose groomers don't know what a trim means when it comes to a Sheltie.

I don't know what the groomer was thinking. Our Sheltie is batteling a skin condition where he has open sores that have scabbed over. Our vet said a bath would help so we advised the groomer of this and that he didnt need a brush (since thag would open the sores) but just a bath and a trim around his legs under belly and butt.
Not once did we say anything about shaving.
I wish I could post pictures on here to show you but I am really goping his hair grows back fine :(

Dog owners of some breeds traditionally have their pet dogs trimmed to a "puppy cut" for easy upkeep, so when you mentioned "trim" to this groomer I suspect that is what they decided you wanted even though you specified where on the body you wanted the trim done. Unfortunately, very few groomers know how to handle a sheltie's grooming needs correctly and I have seen way too many butchered jobs on shelties!

The sores you mentioned...are they staph infections? If so, there is a shampoo, ChlorHex 2X, that you might talk to your vet about using. You lather it up and then leave it on your dog for 5-10 minutes before you rinse it out. It is used for dermatological conditions.

He will be just fine...I know you are upset and I would be too, but his coat will come back in by autumn so he will be ready for next winter. BTW try not to let him see how upset you are...shelties are very sensitive to their human's moods and if he feels your stress he will think HE has done something wrong. He is a beautiful boy....even with his short coat.

I know it's no comfort, but I thought your puppy are cute, I have seen Shellies which looked really "funny" but I did not think your little puppy does.

But remember it is very important to tell your little puppy looks fine, if you are sad, it rubs off on your little star. :yes:
 
He almost looks like a yorkie with his doo. It will grow back and hopefully his skin gets better also. At least he missed the winter mostly and now gets sympathy cookies :winkgrin:
