Nails???

hey y'all how often do you clip your shelties nails? I have wood floors so I pretty much clip them when it sounds like typewriters typing as they roam around my home. But since March both my girls are growing out their nails every week-never was clipping that regularly before with them or my former ones. Seems excessively fast growth. Neither of them enjoys this, they tolerate it, but they don't like it much. I use the standard clipper deal. I have made sure since bringing them home to touch their paws and rub their feet lots, but they KNOW the clipper tool and don't like seeing it. They don't walk on pavement much, maybe that is the difference, nothing to wear them down.

I do my three every week. I use a dremel to grind them instead of clipping them. I have clipped more often if they are excessively long as I notice they don't stand correctly if the nails are long.

I check my two every two weeks. What I dislike they have black toe nails so
I am really careful with the clippers. I like the clippers because I can judge
how far down I believe I can go. Little by little.

Black nails. Blaze has a couple. Makes my blood run cold. And since all dogs can feel the discomfort of the one who cuts their nails, I just know that Blaze would react negatively and make it more likely (through squirming at the wrong moment) that the quick could be cut. Solution? Letting the vet (or groomer do it). I don't know.

Then there's this:

Haven't tried it, but maybe...

I am really careful on Kaleigh because being tricolored, all her nails are black and I have trepidation that I am gonna go farther than I should:uhoh: and of course her's are growing out the fastest lately ...Savannah is easier because they are light colored.

Emmasmom-it is so true, you don't want their lil paws misaligned due to nails, that sets them up for problems. Never tried a dremel, mine probably would freak at the noise.

I've cut so many dogs nails (black) in my life, without any problems.
But with Minnie it become my biggest nightmare. :gaah
Bought a brand new nail clippers and used it two times and each time there was much blood on the table.

After the first time I was sweating all over my body, and then 2 time was the same, so I was ready for anything.

I would try with a cheap grinding when I really doubted Minnie would accept the noise and I did not want to scare her.

Since it was "vitally necessary" that it should be succeeded, I spent half a day to make her familiar with it.

So once again I sweat when we should try it, and it went well --- So now we grind nails about 2 times a week.:lol:

My boys only tolerate Dremel grinding.
I am too afraid to use nail clippers on them.

I usually file down every two weeks unless we go for walks on cement.

I have seen this mat that looks interesting...

-you always provide GREAT links..thank you...that is quite something...I might have to get that.

The beckky board looks interesting, I wonder how much they have to use it to be effective
I found this link and laughed...I can't see me training that but thought it was clever, for those of you with cats, I wonder if they could teach this...

I have seen this, but I would be afraid of the dog's paw pads (?) could be damaged and perhaps the nails can fraying - not matter to Minnie and me

Seems to be the same thing as the ShirleyChong doggie nail file. And since Blaze only has the black nails on his front feet, perhaps just training him to scratch his front feet with me taking care of the back feet will work.

Or maybe I should get some little clippers used for cats (look like scissors) to just take off the very tips regularly.
