New Puppy and Many Problems

Hey guys,

I have had Milo since 4 years now, and since a puppy he was a perfect dog. Never cried at night, never destroyed anything. He allways woke up, took him out for bathroom and no problems, and he was really really calm.

Well, i bred him and now i kept a son of his, named Fox.

This puppy came at the sime time Milo did, wich was 52 days. (A little past month and a half).

This dog is just way to energetic, he wont stop biting, he bites everything he sees.

Well, here are the problems.. to see if anyone can guide me.

1.- When he tries to play with Milo, he rams at him and when he chases him, he bites him. Most of the time i see this little pups mouth with Milo´s hair.

2.- This guy wont go poo outside (Big backyard where he plays, pees "with no problems"). Most of the time when i take him inside, he runs away from me and in one second, hes doing poo.

What i do here is as soon is i catch him, i tell him "no!", grab him and quickly take him outside, but then again he does not continue nor does he do anything.

3.- About his ears, it seems one ear is off. He has one ear wich he points perfectly, but the other is always more to the side. When i felt his ears, more on the cartilage starting right from the head, he has a bigger "lump" inward in one ear than the other.

Reminder, this pup is only 55 days of age.

4.- Last but not least, i am feeding him 4 times a day in small amounts. What is the recomended feeding portion? and when shall i start feeding him 3 times a day? He seems hungry all day long.

Id be really happy if i could get some good tips and advice from all of you :D
 
All puppies have different energy levels. Yours sounds like a very high energy pup. You need to direct his energy. Take him for little walks inside or in the yard, start teaching him sit, down, etc... I would only feed him 3 times a day according to the directions on the food you are feeding him. You should take him out after he eats, after he naps etc. You need to confine him to a smaller area, so you can watch him for signs of pooping and take him out. He is very young, be patient. His ears need to be taped or braced or both if you want them to be perfect. There are many threads about ears on the forum.
 
Exactly, confine to a puppy pen and crate and only allow freedom after he poos outside. I found it helped immensely for Merlin to follow Cadbury, and you could let Fox go to an area where Milo has toileted to encourage him as well. Toilet breaks should always happen on lead, to prevent pup thinking it is play time. But hang in there, they all get it eventually.

As for the rough play, that is quite normal too, but I don't allow it because it can get too much and encourages rough play with dogs on walks, which can cause problems. Again you can use a playpen or stairgate to seperate the dogs when Fox starts the rough play, and I usually say firmly 'No' when Merlin starts on Cadbury.

Ears I can't help with, but one of Merlin's seems to turn slightly. But it all depends on how particular you are about them, I don't worry so it doesn't matter to me that Merlin has a slightly off-centre ear.

BTW, oh my, Fox is absolutely adorable! He is also all puppy which usually means endless energy. I have a 16 week old boy puppy and he needs exercise and structured play to prevent boredom, chewing etc.

Just like our 2 legged kids, they are all different, mature differently, have different talents etc.

I echo the others, lots of exercise, crating and use an x-pen..:smile2:
 
I would also add that 52 days old is still very young. Most breeders recommend bringing a pup home around 8-10 weeks old. I'm not saying that you can't start training early, but just be patient.

This guy is seriously energetic. When i grab him, he does his best to loosen off and not even a breath of staying still. Runs all day long, steals Milo´s food, etc.

I guess i´ll start with the Monks of New Skeets alpha dog training, to teach him i´m boss :P.

About the toilet training, i have been trying to encourage him to go where Milo goes, but for him, that is play area. As soon as i have waited 30 minutes for him to go, we walk inside the house and the first thing he does is run away from me and goes poo.

I´ll just have to keep on it :P, i guess.

I wouldn't give him 30 minutes. If he doesn't go after 5 minutes, take him back inside and crate him. Take him back out about 10 minutes later.

Until he goes to the bathroom, outside is NOT play time. If he does go, reward him and then he can play outside all he wants.

If you give him 30 minutes and he plays the whole time, he will totally forget why he is out there (in fact, he will think he is out there just to play!) You have to teach him to go to the bathroom first, and then he can play and explore.

you might want to take him out on the leash- then you can direct where he goes and when you return to the house, he'll still be with you :winkgrin:
