Not the best way to start a day.

Once again our garden guardian, Willow, has defended her turf but at great cost to everyone equipped with a sense of smell. Yup, another encounter with a small, striped foe.

Winter is the absolute worst time to have an encounter like this as you can't keep your windows open to clear the stench. We popped her straight into the bath, following the instructions on the skunk shampoo, but she's going to need twice-daily baths if we are to banish this stink in any reasonable time frame.

I have three different kinds of skunk scent removal shampoos and I suppose we'll just rotate through them. I have wall-to-wall carpet in most rooms so she's going to be spending a significant amount of her day in the kitchen where the floor is vinyl and easy to clean. I will take this as an opportunity to make some dinners ahead for this week. Willow loves the kitchen when any meals are being prepared.

Currently, every path has a coat of ice from the freezing rain that fell last night. The forecast for the next couple of days is heavy rains, torrential at times. That's not the weather that I would really wish for. Ah, the joys of dog ownership. LOL

As always it is quite eye-opening to see how skinny Willow is under that heavy coat of hers. I don't know how she can fit such a large love-filled heart in such a small, sleek, if somewhat stinky, body.

Oh no!!! You might try dousing her with Coke - I know it sounds weird but my vet told me the acid in the coke really helps. We did this once and let it sit about 10 minutes, then shampooed after. it's worth a try, probably need a 2 liter bottle. I remember it did seem to work.

Your weather sounds foul, so hard to even get the dogs out for potty when it's like that.
BTW skunks cannot climb, they generally squeeze under or through fences or gaps. Once we eliminated those gaps in our fencing we never had another skunk in the back yard.

WOW, not an experience you want to repeat! Willow being banished will break her heart as I know how much she loved to snuggle with you!
I can't even imagine how bad it must smell to her having that heightened sense.
Good luck! I would defiantly try the Coke option.

I think we learned some valuable tips last time we coped with this. Getting some paper towel wet and then putting a drop of skunk odor-fighting shampoo on it allowed me to get to areas on her head that last time we missed as you can't let the shampoo come in contact with eyes or to get down ear canals. Using careful bathing of her muzzle, ears and bib seems to have eliminated the odor. I will still pop her in the tub this evening to do her whole body once more. Willow is snoozing beside me so don't waste too much sympathy on her.

I do feel more for you Glenn...your the one that’s had to clean her up and smell that gawd awful smell. Nothing worse than skunk! Of course Willow has her ways to make you feel sorry for her lol...

That is just dreadful, Glenn, and as you said, worse at this time of year! And on a Sheltie double coat, no less. It must be skunk season ... I've been smelling one around here too and we've caught it once or twice during the overnight on our cameras. I wonder if this is skunk mating season or something. Remembering your last experience with de-skunking I am always really careful with the dogs when I notice that telltale scent outside! I'm so sorry you had to go through it again!
