NuVet Supplements

When I got Missy, the breeder gave me some samples of NuVet Plus supplements. Not wanting them to go to waste, I gave them to her until I ran out, but I didn't buy anymore.

I recently sent the breeder a quick update and pictures of Missy, and asked if she was still taking the NuVet and if I was still feeding TOTW. I told her no on both, but told her Missy is still on a high quality food, I just switched because of the recall. She emailed me back and said I "need" to put her back on the NuVet. Just FYI, this is not in my contract to purchase the puppy.

Has anyone used NuVet Plus for their dogs? When I was browsing the web for reviews, it kinda seemed like this NuVet stuff was a pyramid scheme and breeders were just pushing it to get a small cut of the profits. There is a catalog code required to purchase the stuff from their website. I'm just trying to figure out if this is something I should purchase, or if Missy is going to be just as healthy without it. We've never given our other sheltie supplements until recently (glucosamine), and she's 15.5 years old! Missy is healthy, has a very shiny coat, and is very active.

I have never given supplements to my dogs. I would seriously question why I would need to if the breeder was insisting so badly. It is your decision whether or not to put her on a supplement. This is something I would certainly be discussing with the vet.

On a side note - if this was in the contract, I would have it removed.

I've honestly never heard of it.

I would automatically be suspicious if a breeder is insisting that I put my dog on anything. A recommendation (if I ask for one) is fine, but pushing something on me for no apparent reason makes me uncomfortable.

I tend to lean towards the belief that dogs don't need supplements if you are feeding a high quality food.

Of course, that being said, my dogs get a joint supplement every day--but that is because I would consider them to put more stress on their joints than the average dog.

I would just say "ok" and then continue to do what you are doing. If you are not contractally required to feed it then don't. But, it probably isn't worth arguing with her over it. Some dog people can't let something go once they get it in their head :rolleyes2: So either she is just really really set on this supplement and believes in it, or she is financially benefitting in some way.

To answer your original question, though. No, I have no idea what it is.

If you are feeding a nutritionally balanced, high quality kibble, there should be NO reason to supplement, unless your dog has problems that need to be addressed.

Ditto!

Couldn't have said it better!

Yes breeders make money off of this supplement. About $13.00 a bottle off it. Many breeders put in their contract "Must give nuvet or health guarantee is not valid". Think of the money they are making off you if every buyer buys that stuff. If they really feel that it benefits your dog, a suggestion to the buyer does no harm, but forcing them to use it? Bull.
