One sick dog.....Bacca, my boy!

Hey Barb,

We should talk. I have making Miko's food for almost 2 years now. It gets easier with time. What is Bacca's recipe? I can give you a lot of hints on how to cut out unneccessary steps. Or recommend good quality products (I peel about 8lb of potatoes a week, I HAD to find a great peeler and trust me, most of them suck).

BTW, I say all this, because like you, I HATE HATE HATE to cook. Eating I like. But cooking, I hate. Since getting divorced and living on my own again, I think I have cooked maybe 5 times. Most times it's sandwiches. lol. So, I feel your pain. I cook for Miko, because it's for his health/life. I wouldn't do it otherwise.

PM me or post here.

I can't convince you guys to cook it, freeze it and ship it to me? Well, crap....into the kitchen I go.....

My only other option is Medical......:gaah

So stay tuned for my cooking adventures! And yes, maybe Bacca and I will share food!

On that note....Indy is healthy.....should I keep him to a normal protein diet or switch him too?????? I'd rather not have two diets for two dogs.

On home cooking, I fed Harper Lee the same as Seamus and boy did she gobble. I did use some supplements, Dr. Dodds talks about it on her site. I am sure the vets here have suggestions also.

Kudos to the Cook. And Harper Lee wants to come live with you now.:biggrin2:

Hugs,
Kate

FYI. There are companies that will prepare your food for you, freeze and ship it out weekly. Very expensive though. I believe when I looked into it, it was about $150-$200 A WEEK!!!! But hey, that may be worth it.

As for Indy, IMHO, if he's doing well, just leave him on whatever you're feeding him now and decide later. Trust me, you want to make this as easy for you as possible. If he's fine, don't mess with it. If later on, you want to change his diet or cook for him too, so be it. After 2 years, I still don't want to cook for Miko, but I do. So Koji gets the same kibble he's been getting (Acana on rotation).

I'm busy downloading recipes....but not actually start to cook them....ok, yeah, I may be procrastinating a little......but truly eyes are spinning!

I need to consider supplements as well for long-term health over and above his liver issues.

I keep reading about ensuring "high quality" protein but nobody actually says what that is. I need to keep phosphorus and ammonia down, but I've not quite figured out how to do that consistently either, yet still provide a balanced diet.

I think I've decided to mix a lower protein kibble into whatever homecooked I decide upon. The home cooked recipes is still TBD. Dr. Dodd's recipe is not a long term diet I've bookmarked at least a dozen recipes. My vet suggests Hillary's Blend diet....which means including her supplemeents, whatever they are.

Sooo.....here is my question.

If you home cook, what are the supplements that you add, and where do you get them? I think about all the adds in my current kibble for antioxidants, probiotics, prebiotics, glucosamine, Vitamins a-z. etc. Eyes spinning! I don't know where to start!

You and I are soul mates here! I'll be in touch as soon as my eyes stop spinning and I figure out a few more things.

Thx much!

Yep! That sounds like me. Downloading and looking up so much stuff and then the hardest thing to do is get my butt up and do the thing I spent so much time looking up:lol:! By the way, what do you mean when you say your eyes are spinning?:confused2:

Definitely overwhelmed! I've printed off an inch thick of material. I'm pretty good at basic dog nutrition but when I now have to start looking into phosphorus and ammonia - and just what the heck is "high quality" protein for dogs with liver shunts.....and then there is the hepatic encepalopthy to be concerned with

And trying to find diets that combine the right levels of high quality protein (but not too much, btw), low level phosphorus and ammonia, and if I'm going to go 100% home cooked, what additional supplements to I need. :gaah:gaah:gaah
