One sick dog.....Bacca, my boy!

that really sucks Barb,, I hope you get Bacca's problems sorted out soon... seek a second opinion...maybe a university..

Barb, I'm very sorry for your frustration and I hope everything gets sorted out soon. I hope Bacca gets an official diagnosis and the right medical treatment to make him feel comfortable. We are thinking of you and Bacca!

I tend to agree that a 2nd or 3rd opinion would be a good idea. Just a suggestion but what about the U. of Guelph?? I know you have spent alot $$$, never mind all the stress this must cause (I can only imagine) but we sheltie lovers do seem to go that extra mile for our babies. I think about Bacca every day and wonder how things are with you, so am hoping you can get some answers soon.

I'm really sorry to hear of Bacca's problems. I can appreciate what you are going through as I had to fight and fight to get a diagnosis when my Yogi was sick - the 'specialists' were no good for us either and I also footed the bill for a needless ultrasound etc. It's bad enough having a poorly dog without worrying that that the vets are not proceeding as they ought. I'm surprised they carried out tests that you had not agreed to before hand and didn't do what you had asked for. Seems very odd.

My only experience of liver shunts was with our very first sheltie Misty who had one as a puppy while she was with her original owner. I was didn't know they could be present in older animals I really hope this gets sorted for you and Bacca soon. :hugs

Sorry to hear you and Bacca are going through such a tough time. I feel blessed to have had such great vets and pray you get this all sorted out.

Back in 2011 our half-Sheltie, Boo-Boo, developed a large tumor on his spleen. After consulting with the vet, who advised us that he might not survive an operation, we resolved on taking him home and making him as comfortable as we could. After one episode in which we were sure we were going to lose him, my wife patiently nursed him back to health, and he lived an entire year virtually symptom-free, and got to enjoy all the love and affection we could give him. Last Thanksgiving it finally caught up to him, and after a very brief episode of collapse he laid down in his little bed and died. I'm glad now that my wife refused to give up on him. And our new little Sheltie, Dickens, is the virtual reincarnation of the guy.

The only hard part about taking little doggies into your life is the knowledge that you will probably outlive them. But it's still worth it, and then some!

Barb, no help or suggestions from me but sending lots of positive thoughts your way. Hoping the 2nd opinion vet can help Bacca and that you get a real diagnosis quickly!

Thanks for your thoughts and feedback.

Your feedback and some of my own research still questions this diagnosis, yet at the same time, its hard to dispute the fact that his blood work is crazy wrong.

As was mentioned earlier in a reply....if a dog has congenital liver shunt you would expect impaired growth, from birth, etc. I've got none of that. Only birth abnormality was that he was cryptoid.

Except for his bloodwoork results, his current skin funk and his occasional "brain farts", he is healthy weight, eating well, oversized for a Sheltie.

None of this makes sense to their diagnosis.

I'm devoting this week to "What to do about Bacca". I bought the bookd by Cyndi Smasal on Hope for Healing Liver Disease. Maybe this will give me some pointers, or at least more questions to ask.

Thanks everyone for your love and support as I work through this inexplicable "whatever" that Bacca has.
