Peticure, professional dremmel or high quality nail clippers?

I've been using the Peticure for a long time now and was a big fan at first. But now that the pups are getting older, it does not seem to be working as efficiently as it used to.

It could be because their nails are getting harder as they get older, and I'm being too tentative about putting pressure as I grind. Would I get better results with a professional dremmel? Or should I just be strong and push harder on the nail?

Indy actually prefers his nails clipped than dremelled, but I know that my clippers are inadequate. They tend to shred the nail. Can anyone recommend a good quality but not over the top expensive nail clipper?

I've never used the Peticure, so I can't comment on that part of the question... although I LOVE the fact that it has brought the idea of grinding, rather than clipping, dogs' nails to the everyday dog-owner.

I have a Dremel 1100 "Stylus" and the pup and I love it. (Well, "love" might not really be the best word to describe his feelings about the thing... ) My only caveats about it are that yes, it is a bit pricey, and that my (admittedly tiny, female) hands are a bit small for it. I grew up using the "stick-type" Dremel MultiPro, and the Stylus gives you much better control when doing nails.

The other nice thing about the Stylus is that it has variable speed - there are ten different settings from 5,000-25,000 RPM. If you find yourself needing a little more "oomph" and needing to press harder to get the nails done, you can increase the speed.

One little dumb question on your Peticure... you probably already thought of this, but does the sanding drum need to be changed out...? That could be the sticky wicket. They wear out pretty quick, especially with multiple dogs.

I have the Pedicure and I do NOT like it. I find that if I put pressure on, it stops! Therefore it takes me forever to do ONE nail. So, I bought a dremel - only $50 at the local hardware store. This one is pink - made for professional estheticians to use on human nails, gel nails etc. I love it. It has two speeds and it is quiet - much quieter than the Pedicure. My dogs don't mind it at all - although Chinook still prefers to have his nails clipped with clippers, whereas Maia, prefers the dremel.

I too own a stylus, I brought it after my other one bit the dust! I love the speed adjustment on it, I use a lower speed for the puppies nails and a higher speed for my older dogs. I actually use the grinding stone on their nails and it seems to last forever, I hated using the sanding drum on my old one because it wouldnt seem to stay on....hmm have to try it on the stylus again and see if I can get it to stay on better.
Also I love the stylus has a cool little holder to keep all your tools in one place, its currently sitting on my bookcase until I get the kennel room done, or rather I can coral my dad here to help get it done! but than it will sit on my countertop in the kennel/dog room.

Hi Lightplum,

If your sanding drum won't stay on, you need to tighten the screw in the middle of the shaft and it expands the rubber to hold tight the sanding drum.

I bought the Peticure- professional- the plug-in one. have had way too many rechargeable things die an early death. I also bought the bag of replacement sanders so when it starts looking/working less efficiently- I have plenty to choose a new one. Callie will let me use it but no way on Happy. I still use clippers on him so I second Barb's plea:
"Can anyone recommend a good quality but not over the top expensive nail clipper?"

Any kind of Dremel like rotary tool will do, I just wouldn't cheap out and buy a really cheap one from a dollar store (If there is such a thing).

I was given a Job Mate rotary tool, a brand that Canadian Tire sells and it works just as well as the Dremel. And my husband is glad to have is Dremel back.

I've seen my Job Mate rotary tool on sale several times for $10.

I also have the stylus. I would never go back to clipping nails. Since I started her out the first week I got her, she doesn't have an issue with doing her feet. And I like the idea of the lithium battery. Makes the cost higher but hopefully will last longer.

I also use the stylus instead of my old dremel. Has lots of power and you don't have to run extension cords for various projects. Even have caught hubby sneaking it out to use on various projects.
