you now michele, im wondering if it is a bird bite that i just didnt notice until the blood dried and looked like dirt. But I have never left the macaw and the puppy unspervised, i caught him in the bin heard the puppy squeal ran over there got him out of the bin immediatly, and checked her and she was fine. im at a loss of words. but honeslty i would much rather have it my macaw bit her then a bot fly, today it looks much better, i have been giving her the amoxi and cleaning it out with iodine and water and using bacitracin. the thing that made me wonder is the 2 seperate smalll puncture wounds, this one has bit me before and i never got 2 seperate puncture wounds like that , and my forehead bled forever, but im really wondering. i found out what the problem with the bird and the puppy are, tony the male wants belles bin to nest in, i tried something last nigt, i put teh bin in the lilving room, for the birds, and took belle and she slept with me last night (no potty in the bed yeahhh!) i got up and the birds were in the bin, and tony bit me pretty good. with no bin, tony is super sweet to me.
so the bin potty training is no longer. i have a little crate for right now i can use that tony and skye will not fit in, and you know i tried a different basket, and tony didnt want it, and Belle jumped out of it, tried another bin, Tony didnt want it, its this one paticular one he wants. i know he is trying to nest and being viscious to me, with that stupid bin, when there is no bin, he doesnt bother the dogs, he might try to chase jake a little if jake is in his way, but has never bitten like that ever. first time i have ever had a male and female of the same species of macaw, didnt know i had a female and male for sure, no tests have proved that. guess i know now. I cant believe over night how much that wound has healed, i will have to get more photos..
Belle has no shots yet, my original plan was to wait til she was a little older and take her and jake in to get everything they can at once. i asked the vet and she said to wait til she is at least 8 weeks with her history of the seizuers she had. (hasnt had any now.)
she said at 8 weeks i can also get her on flea treatment and heart worm stuff, is that true? i know my friends puppy got on that stuff at about 12 weeks.
ok so as far as shots right now if this was your puppy who started with the seizure issues what would you do as far as shots? she is still on amoxi, which i will give her first dose soon, i just woke up and am stil trying to function. ill get photos of the wound and put them back up.
oh, so my vet had said puppy chow, so i got puppy chow and since she was on beneful before i mixed them together and she loved them, i added some holistic food in with the mixture, and both dogs are eating it. no diarrhea or bloody stool. should I stick with the puppy chow and add in some of the holistic like i was doing for her? my friend just bought the blue buffallo stuff, im sure she would share a cup with me to see how belle would tollerate it, but i dont want to keep changing right now with a healing wound and her on worming meds.
im going to post on a macaw forum too, to see if this is combination jealousy and sexual maturity. before i put the bin out to see, tony was all snuggled up with me and even put his head on my shoulder to cuddle.
Well these are my thoughts.And please..don't take this like I'm out to hurt your feelings.But those that know me well here on the forum,know I say it like I mean it~
For sleeping arrangements:
Bella would be perfectly fine in a crate,wither next to your bed,in another room.Whichever and however you are comfortable with.I had differant arrangements for both of our shelties. She needs to be crated.Even if you do have to get up and potty her,she will let you know,or set your alaram.(Gosh I don't miss those days)
Trapp's crate was here in kitchen/dining area.He was perfectly content to watch me thru the day,as I spend a great deal of time in kitchen.He was a very sound sleeper.
I could get up at 3-4am and he would never stir.And I could enjoy my morning coffee,be on the PC,and he could care less.
Jasper was and still is a light sleeper,so putting him in the same area,was not working.I put his crate in a spare bedroom,and as of lately,have moved it into the formal living room,which we never use.He is closer to the kitchen,but not out in the open.
I am not one to fuss over the pups,when it was bedtime or naptime.If it was time,and they have pottied,etc...they were put down for the night at the same time every day.I like routines,since my day starts very early,I wanted my pups on my schedule as far as me getting the amount of sleep I needed to function.
Our pups were NEVER put in our bed at that age.NEVER. It was I am going to say right around 5 months that Trapp was put on the bed one day while I was folding laundry,and he made himself quite comfy up there,so I let him nap while I did my household chores.He was fully housetrained by then.
At 6 months,he had full reign of the house,day & night.He was not kept in a crate at night,I let him nest in with Earnhardt. Just 3 weeks ago,he jumped on our bed all by himself,so he comes and goes thru the night.He may start with us,but is always with Earnhardt by morning,on the sofa.
Jasper is still crated at night,but does'nt need to be.He is fully trained,and has had free reign of the house for 2 months probably.I am crating him,cause I feel like it,and he is quite comfy there all night.Plus...I would need a bigger bed!
If you choose to sleep with the bird,then she needs to be crated.JMO~
As far as shots..our pups made thier first vet visit the week they were brought home,depending on what day it was,usually the following Monday.Both of our pups were 9 weeks old when they came home from Janets,and they had already been started on thier shots,and been wormed 2x or 3x by then.
Since worming starts at 2 weeks. Other than the seizures she was having,your vet should have givin you guidance on shots,as I know you had her there several times in the first few days she was home with you. If he or she is telling you to wait till you bring Jake in..that doesn't sound quite like good info.
I think if you have complete confidance in your vet..you need to follow your vets regimen of shots,and when they must be givin.I personally cannot give you advice,as I have not had a pup with a possible seizure disorder.
(My son yes) He had seizures as a young child,but outgrew them..As far as her seizures your vet knows best. Why is she on Amoxicillin? Was it vet prescribed? I guess I missed that.
I would not,and I repeat..would not have her in contact with any creature..one that flies or otherwise.! And depending on what Jake needs for shots,or worming,tests that need doing etc...honestly they both need to be dealt with by a vet,to make sure they are on a schedule of vaccinations.
It is my strong opinion and thought,she has been pecked by your bird.And if that was the case with me,to be honest,the bird would be gone or put in another room,to make sure it does not happen again.
Now I am not a bird lover..but a bird of that size & nature needs to be put somewheres in a cage,or some other contraption for its comfort,and still be a part of the family.If you choose to have this bird,then you need to make sure she is not hurt by it again.
But certainly not left to its own,being able to be in contact with this new pup.And givin free will of ones home,unless supervised,and the pup is in a crate.
As far as food...good golly girl...quit changing foods!!!
If you want holistic,grain free,than by the god stay with it.If you want Beneful(Not my choice obviously) then stay with it.Again,I am not going to give you the absolute decision on what you feed your pups,that is your choice.But you have to stop the "whys,..how comes..and she did this...feed the puppy,but quit changing foods.
This puppy is so new,her belly cannot be expected to do flip flops,just because you cannot make up your mind,or your vet says one thing,and you do another.My vet can make suggestions,but it doesn't mean I feel its best.
When it came to the babes here,they were already on a premium food before they went to the vets the first trip there.
Our dogs have been on the same food,right up till just last week,and Trapp is a year old,Jasper almost 9 months,and Earnhardt is 6.We're still trying to figure out why Trapp has decided his taste for Taste of the Wild,has gone haywire.For all I can see,I think its a hormonal issue with him. Pesticides used on a very young puppy,especially one with a low immune sysyem,for me is only spelling trouble.And I say pesticides strongly,cause they are chemical based.
Does she have a flea problem? Soes Jake have a flea problem? If you answered yes to the last question....you need to take steps in your home,to rid your house of fleas.How about the bird(s)..?
If my memory serves me correctly,our shelties were tested for heartworm somewhere around 16 weeks.They were put on my choice of prventative then. Both tested negative,and I could have told my vet they would,but for the sake of making sure,they needed testing. My choice of preventitive meds is Revolution.It is a 3 way preventative.It takes care of fleas,heartworms,ear mites,all at one time.No need for seperate doses of differant items. The reason for Revolution was also becuse I was givin a year supply for my dogs from a dear friend.My supply is now almost depleted.
Altho I do not have a flea problem,never have,and I hope to gosh I don't.I have always had the feelings,why put chemicals on them if you don't need them. As far as worming,I worm my dogs monthly just because thats the way I am.I get my worming medication at my feed & seed store.
Others have used other products with great results.
