meh. It's low, but not OMG low. Fix the food first, then address the thyroid if that issue still exists after the body heals from the constant infection.
I have my little guy on Blue Buffalo puppy. he really likes it, and its a good quality one (at least from what i can tell from this site 
). yes it is more expensive, about $2 per lb at petsmart, but when we looked at different foods just before we brought him home, we looked also at how much it suggests you feed the dog. some of the cheaper brands were suggesting 2-2.5 cups a day, where the BB, we give him 1 cup. So it may be more expensive to go with a higher quality, but as others on here will probably tell you, you feed them less because there are fewer fillers, which also means less poop to have to clean up!

Foods such as Wellness Core, Now!, Acana, Blue Wilderness, Merrick Before Grain, EVO, Taste Of The Wild, Instinct, and Orijen are all high quality grain free dog foods. You will need to go to a pet store as opposed to the grocery store to get them. Beneful is crap in a bag...

I feed Petcurean Summit - all local produce/meat except for imported lamb. My guys are doing very well on it. As mentioned, you may want to try a grain-free food though.

Echo the opinions from the members about the food. Raw is best I agree 100 per cent. If not raw then at least what I feed mine. That is cooked chicken, pork, sweet potatos, white potatos, vegetables. Cost a little more, but save mega bucks on vet bills in the long run.
Don't forget to go to the Illinois Sheltie Rescue site for thyroid information. Our rescue uses their expertise, tried and true. If you feel more comfortable, you can call them and get a one on one conversation, they are really nice.

We feed Taste of the Wild and you can purchase it from Tractor Supply. It is a high quality food that doesn't break the bank. The Pacific Stream is made from fish and is good for the skin and coat.

I know 3 shelties on Beneful. All 3 of them have a strong odor about them. They are all healthy, though. So the Beneful is working in that department. Beneful dog food itself has a strong odor. (took care of a sheltie on it)

I feed Blue Buffalo Puppy and Blue Buffalo Weight control for my adult dogs. I used to feed Iams and switched about 6 mos. ago. I'll admit it's expensive, but, it's worth it and you don't feed as much.
There is a website you can go to and compair all the different brands. BUT, I can't remember what it is. I'm sure someone can chime in......
