Poor babies -- at emergency vet

Tonight the cat knocked a bottle of rimadyl off the counter while my husband and I were upstairs in the bedroom for no more than 5 minutes. The door was shut and when we opened the door, Lexi and Bentley were at the door and Enzo was chewing in the empty bottle.

We gave Enzo and Lexi peroxide immediately (95% sure it was Enzo) but neither threw up so my husband took them to the emergency vet. They induced vomiting (not as quickly as I would have liked) and think there were some pieces in Enzo's vomit but nothing they could see in Lexi's.

Because neither one threw up all of the pills, and it was a borderline toxic dose both dogs will need to be hospitalized and flushed with IVs for 72 hours with intermittent renal panels.

I am so upset and worried. I am upset at myself for leaving that bottle out and my heart is hurting for my babies who don't understand why they are being left behind. Enzo is my strong little man and I have no doubt he will make friends with everyone there. But Lexi...she cowers when she goes to the vet as is and is so sensitive. I know she will be scared and feel abandoned and I'm crying just thinking about it!

Wow, how scary. It's lucky you caught them so quickly. Are they giving them anything to line their stomachs as well so they don't develop ulcers? 3 days away is such a long time, you must be besides yourself, are they letting you visit? And are you covered by insurance cause that's gonna be one hell of a vet bill?

I'll have to be more careful with the Previcox. I tend to always leave the top off because I battle with the child proof lids, and leave it in the box. But I will put several days worth in the pill cutter containers (each dog has their own) with their other drugs. I never really thought about what would happen if one of the cats knocked them off. I don't think Tully would touch them but the previcox is flavoured.

All our wishes are headed your way that they both recover fully from this event.

Many hugs and prayers coming your way and the hope that Enzo and Lexi will be home very soon. Something like this can happen so fast and so easily. I can only imagine how scared you were when you realized what had happened.

Oh my! Ashley, please keep us updated on Lexi and Enzo. You caught it quickly and have done everything you possibly can. Lexi will forgive you!

I hope the emergency vet will let you come visit; it will help her to see you. (It helped Edan when we had to suddenly leave him at the emergency clinic for his gallbladder.) You are right that it may make her more nervous going to the vets office. We learned with Edan taking CJ with us calmed him down. Thankfully our vet's understanding and doesn't mind the extra dog in the room during appointments.

*hugs* Three days will pass quickly. I'll keep Lex and Enzo in my thoughts and prayers.

How awful, Ashely, and what a scare! I hope they're both OK this morning. I'll pray that all is well. I know it's terrible to leave them but at least they have each other, so there's some familiarity. Maybe that will help Lexi cope. Sending good thoughts and hugs to you!! This is the kind of thing that could happen to any of us.

I am not sure if they have given them anything for their stomachs. What do they normally give? Unfortunately I have to work today so Jonathan is the one checking in with vets, etc. I can certainly have him ask!

And yes, they will let us visit. I'm sure I'll be there multiple times over the next few days, even though it will break my heart!

Luckily we are moving them to the regular vet this morning (vs. the emergency vet) which will save us some money. We do have pet insurance but we have the SUPER high deductible, so I'm not sure if this will qualify or not.

How's Bentley doing without the two of them in the house?

Sadly he has been sick, too! Totally unrelated but he's had a bout of his weird stomach thing we can't seem to figure out. We actually have a call out to the vet to figure out what the next step is (specialist?) He seems to be feeling better today, but he's likely happy that the house is a bit quieter.

I don't think so. The dogs were alone for 5 minutes, and when we opened the door again both Bentley and Lexi were sitting at the door. Bentley is the last to notice anything, least likely to go downstairs without us, and would also be the last to be allowed to share in any spoils. I think the chances are about 95% that Enzo opened the bottle and ate all of them immediately. I really don't even think that Lexi got any, but since she's queen bee I guess there would be a tiny chance that she ate them and came back upstairs (though I doubt it). Just not a risk we could take.
