Potty Signs

I was so glad to see this thread. Barkley, at almost two, still doesn't have a signal to go out. Pixie barks at the door, quietly at first and then more insistently. Ivy comes and pokes at my leg with her paw. She developed this system on her own, and she will NOT paw at anyone but me. (Go figure.)

Barkley, though, in spite of hanging those darn bells on the door and being the barkingest dog ever, does nothing. As a result, I am always running him outside as insurance. I am still trying to figure out how to teach him to tell me. :rolleyes2:

He does love to play tug with the bells though, Chris...can I get a HoHoHo?! :lol:
 
I have a almost 5 month old puppy that will either sniff around the door or sit by the door. Sitting by the door is way more rare. I can usually tell because she stops chewing on her toys and sniffs around a lot. Doesn't go in the house though, her sniffing is her way of saying "I gotta go mom."
 
Bentley will whine sometimes, but mostly he'll stand just far away (like what GeeRome said) that I can't reach him, and he'll stamp his feet! He shifts his weight around like "cmon mom! I've gotta go!"

When he was younger, he would circle around sniffing the ground. I can also tell when we're working that he has to go because he's much less focused.
 
Edan usually starts with some whining. If that doesn't work, he jumps up on the couch beside me an stares at me until I pay attention to him. If that still doesn't work, he paws at me. When i ask him if he has to go out, he barks, runs toward the door - with a pause to make sure I'm following. (If we are still in bed, he climbs all over us until one of us wakes up.)
 
Oh boy! My boy went out right away, and my girl was another story. I have a green rug in the living room, and I swear the little diva thought it was grass. I said potty and pointed outside with my boy's help, she got the idea.
All eyes are on you little girl, so out you go.

My boy would go in circles and sniff at first too, he caught on quickly. My girl wouldn't do anything but squat and it was right now. I know she wasn't crated much by the breeder because she hated the crate until she got a spay job. Why that changed her I have no idea. When I got her she acted horrible about the crate, but it was for her own safety when I went out. At a year and half I uncrated her slowly. I just use gates, and they are both good and do fine when I am gone. They have the familyroom and kitchen, no accidents, or chewing anything up.

When they want out they do the sheltie ballet, and bark. Now I laugh at the little diva because when she has to go potty, I don't care if I have a load of laundry in my arms, its NOW, of course with a sheltie ballet and a persistent bark.
 
Weight shifting

Gotta be a sheltie thing then because, when Hunter actually gives me a signal, that's what he does. He stands too far away to pet, stares at me and shifts his weight back and forth. I think Sable called it the 'sheltie ballet' ? Love it LOL

In the midst...

Caliber and I are still trying to perfect the potty training...altho he is only 3 months old, I think he's doing PRETTY well...his signal at first is whining...then when asked "What do you need, Bud?" he'll usually walk a few steps, look back, so I'll follow...and that just repeats until he gets to about the fridge which is a few feet away from the door, then I ask "Do you have to go outside, and go pee-pee?" and he'll usually play the drums on the floor complete with a circle...but...that's usually only about 60% of the time...the other 40% he just goes on newspaper. lol But *fingers crossed* he'll catch on better sooner or later! Only has about 1 or 2 accidents per day!! :biggrin2:
 
A couple of mine do the "sheltie spin" running in circles and practcailly banding in half as they do that. This is why we call FoxMan the 'furtzel" he looks like a furry pretzel when excited like that when you ask him to go outside. We do have a doggy door, but sometimes the dogs just like the reassurance of me letting them out just to make sure I am aware of their needs. They just bark then
 
A sleigh Bell

We taught Dylan to ring a bell we hung on the main entrance door to give us signal. We did that by ringing a bell everytime we took him out for a potty while he was a pub. (Don't ring a bell if you are going out for a walk even though your pup will do his business while walking). Now that he is 2 and a half years old he pretty much goes on schedule. Once in the morning (with #2:winkgrin:), once in the afternoon, once in the evening (with #2:biggrin2:) and once before we go sleep. He rings a bell sometimes if he has an emergency situation.
