Potty Signs

My idea probably wouldn't fly very well with your boyfriend..... If he is the one that is ignoring the dog, he is the one that has to clean up the mess and do it properly. He wouldn't last long at my house! Maybe then he'll get the idea that when the dog is whining, he needs to go out.

I hope the bells work for you! Good Luck!

You're right, it wouldn't, and it DOESN'T fly well with him...lol I come home from work and poor Caliber has a few accidents, and gives me that poor little "I tried to tell him Mommy..." look, and it breaks my heart. I always am sure to not scold him for it, and reassure him that it's ok('cause he usually backs away from me whe he knows I see his mess), and just take him outside and say to him "You go pee-pee (or) poo-poo outside!" in a calm voice, and when he does, I praise him like mad. Usually by the time I get back inside the mess(es) are still there, and I'm the one to clean them up. He's my dog, and therefore, my responsibility, but two firm trainers are better then one...I wish he would just try a bit harder...:(

I'm sorry our b/f is making things so difficult for you and Caliber, its entirely not fair to you or Caliber!

Do you crate Caliber when you're not home? If so you need to to get through your b/f's head that when he takes the pup out of his crate he assumes all responsibility of the pup when you're not home, INCLUDING cleaning up his messes. If your b/f doesn't like it then he leaves the pup in his crate, plain and simple. He can't expect not to be responsible for the pup while at the same time expecting the perks of having a pup, such as playing with it when you're not around.

If he's ignoring Caliber's whining I'd mention what I just said above. If its a matter of him not hearing him then definitely try training Caliber with bells.

*Sigh*...

Yes, I do crate him when I am not home, and I make sure to remind my b/f to crate him when he leaves for work and I'm still working. Even if it's for as little as a half hour. You bring up a good point tho when you say "when he takes the pup out of his crate he assumes all responsibility of the pup when you're not home, INCLUDING cleaning up his messes" and if he doesn't like it then leave him in his crate. I'll have to smooth that point over with him.

Thanks for all of your support everyone! I'm just beginning to think...if this is how he is with a pup, what's it going to be like when he have a baby?

It's funny how something as simple as a puppy makes you dig deep into the meaning of a relationship...lot's going on in this little head of mine. But I have Caliber to talk to, and confide in! And as you all know - a Sheltie is best at that! <3

I know with my husband when we were just dating he wanted nothing to do with our first puppy b/c he was jealous of the attention I was giving her so he never wanted to help...but then they started bonding and now were 4 dog's deep :biggrin2: it just may take some time.

my husband likes the dogs but any mess is mine. he wont let them out of the crate he says they are my dogs I have to deal with them. although he will let them out if I am sick, but messes their all mine :uhoh:

Hugs to you. With my XH, he said to me, "it's your responsibility, all I'm going to do is play with him so he loves me best". Ohmigod. I was NOT expecting that. XH LOVES dogs and kids. However, I would watch Miko try to play with him, and XH would get upset, becuase he was playing PS2 or something. Having Miko and raising him was the biggest reason I decided I was not having kids with this man.

With DH, I promised him I'd take care of Koji because I'm the one that truly wanted him (DH didn't think we were ready to have a pup). Koji is a handful, and my marriage is suffering a bit because I am very resentful that DH refuses to do anything to help (of course, he says I agreed I'd take care of him). But that's my story. Seriously though, talk to him, and if he's really not willing, I'd think twice about that r'ship.

Bells + whining!

Gavin is a whiner...when he wants ANYTHING. If he wants to play, he stands in front of me and whines. But if he goes to the door or goes to the door and whines, well he needs to go out. This is he does at anyplace I am visiting, too, so he gets the concept. If he rings the bells, it's because whining didn't work and he REALLY needs to go out.
He is about 90% good (only 10% of requests are to just go out and play).

And if I'm a bad mommy and ignore these signs, he will do his business on the bathroom floor. The linoleum is an easy clean up and it is the proper room for such behavior, so I can't get mad at him can I?

I use a bell too, but a service bell that I bought at Staples, so it sits on the floor. Chinook uses his paw to ring it. It took him about 4 tries to get it. I use the clicker to teach him. He's 5.5 months now, and no accidents for the last 1.5 months! Although, he did catch on that ringing the bell means going outside, so sometimes he rings it just to go and play, so I take the bell away right after we come back in and he did his business, and but it back on the floor after an hour or so. Plus, I can take it everywhere with me, and I just show him where it is at someone's house, so he can ring it there.

Now that's a smart Sheltie, to be able to transfer the skill to a new place. We're all impressed here.
