Potty training

I just got myself a six month old female. I did not crate her on he very first days upon arrival. She pee and poop after two days in my living room and continue peeing and pooing on the same spot or around it. I bring her out after every meal but she just wouldn't do it out there and chose to do it at home after the walk. Like within minutes after reaching home and drinking up. I tried sternly said no and transfer a little of her poo and pee to the papers where I want her to do it. I did let her smell it before transferring but she still choose to do it in the living room. You guys got any idea how can I train her to pee or poo on the papers and outside.

Behavorial issues aside, she has got some furs forming sorta a huge knot behind her ears, side of her face and under her armpits. Do I cut them away since i can't seems to get them off. Thanks!

Treat her like a puppy and crate her letting her outside every hour or so just to potty no playing. Then back in the crate. If she pees or poops in the kennel do every 15 mins until they can hold it an hour or two in the kennel. When she is trained to the kennel do outside to potty, bring her in the house watch her for 10-15 mins back in the crate and repeat until she can go longer out in the house(contained) without having an accident if she does then its back to crate, ouside, crate, outside. Never let the dog out of your sight at 6 months she should hold at least 7 hours in the crate. Patience is the key but she must realize for now that outside is the only place to potty if not she will have to hold it in the crate eventually they will get it:smile2:

Use a slicker brush on the mats and either baby powder or cornstarch. This should on helping you brush out the fur.

Also, you can use a greyhound comb (the metal one) to pick through the knots really slowly. Sometimes you can even use your fingers a little bit to pull them apart.

I will admit that if your dog isn't used to it, this is a very tedious process, and the pup may not tolerate it at all. If that's the case, try to make the knot as small as possible, and then you may cut it out.

If you cut it out, vow to comb the area behind the ears on a regular basis (you can add baby powder, like emmasmom said) so they don't get super matted like that again.

hmm, I think you will confuse your pup even more if you try training pads in the house and outside at same time... choose one.
If your pup does not soil the crate, use it.
Teaching a command " go potty " do your biz" whatever word you choose- once you outside and your pup is doing business, repeat the word and jack pot with treats and praise. Keep a journal if you have to and be very strict for next 2 weeks- crate, food, drink, out, nothing happen- back into crate, 15 minutes later out again, praise, reward etc.
Tie her with second leash to your waist if you have to move around the house and can not watch her closely. NO FREE ROAMING in the house until proven trustworthy
Remove carpet and rug if you can
clean the area where she potties in the house with Nature Miracle or other odor removing product
it does not take long with shelties to get the message

Some dogs just take a little longer to learn to toilet, but also it takes a while to learn a new routine for toileting. Work out at what times she goes to the toilet and make sure she is in her toileting area at those times - and what until she finishes. Most often dogs need to go to the toilet a little while after waking up, eating, playing and walking. Also make sure you have regular shedule that you take her to the toilet, so she learns the routine.

I would confine her access to areas until she is toilet trained. Keep her away from the area she usually piddles. Dont put too much emphasis on scolding her. She obviously does not know what is required, and as she will still need to toilet she will just learn to hide her toileting from you - what you cant see wont upset you.

It isnt unusual for a young dog not to want to toilet in public. My male used to cry and cry for holding on to toilet until he got home. It takes a while for them to work out its okay to toilet outside the home.

I'm sure she can hold for hours since she never pee or poo in her cage. I'll wake up at six to feed her and bring her out. I have to be out by 8 for work and it's her time from that point onwards. Is it ok to cage her for long period of time. I'll be home by six and it's her meal time and walk time. Her pee and poo comes after 30mins or so after the walk.

Ok let's assume she pee and poo outside, I must praise and play with her. Should I still lock her up in cage after she's done with her business

It is a little too long for dog to spend in their crate specially young ones, you need to figure out if anyone can come in midday and take your pup out. Generally speaking for people who work long hours getting older dog usually better choice. Puppies, even 6 months ones need a lot of time and energy to train them well, socialize them, take them to classes, playdates etc.
If you fairly sure that your pup just did all their business you can let her play for supervised 15-30 minutes before going back to crate or getting tied up to your waist. Whole process does not take long to figure out, but you have to be strict in the beginning... It did not take more than 2 weeks with either of my dogs to get potty trained but then again between my DH and me we were home a lot during that time.

all your comments were much appreciated and i'd try my best. once again, thanks ;D

A little update. She just pee and poo outside after 5 hours of walking, crating. Hope she can keep it up. It does take her alot of walk before she's willing to **** or pee. Aparrently all that happens only when my neighbor dog played with her
