Puppy Food

I would not necessarily go with what breeder is feeding. Many breeders to promote the brandare subsidized by big name commercial brands like IAMS, Pro Plan, Sciece Duet and Royal Canin, which are not the best or the cheapest either!

I am definitely liking the looks of Fromm Puppy, but also have found Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken Puppy that looks good.

I like the Solid Gold one because there isn't any chicken in it.

I guess the trouble is that I have no idea what is making Enzo's poops abundant (:ick) and soft.

Is it the fiber? Both are low ~3.5%
Is it the protein? The food he is on now is all chicken. Fromm is duck and chicken, Solid Gold is lamb and fish.
Is it the grains? I have yet to find a puppy food (not all life stages) that is Grain Free.

There are many grain free puppy foods.....TOTW, Now! Metrics To name a few. Acana also, but I would worry about the protein being a little too high. All of these brands have alternate protein sources like bison, duck, turkey, salmon, etc.

Yes, chicken and not enough fibre could both contribute to messy stools. I would also look for something with no corn. It's just a filler and just shoots through to make big poops. Cc

You know Barb,

We are two very opinionated individuals. That said, I don't think you should "bulk" all Breeders into your possible experiences. I trust our breeder to tell us the straight dope as they feel is correct through much research and actual whelping of puppies as well as raising and caring for many adults. Many years of breeding Shelties does go a long way.

I full well realize Chip is only one but I am not going to degrade Iams or any of the others just because of one or a few opinions. As I said before, "Chip is doing great in all aspects, Iams it is for us and Chip."

My mom breeds Irish Setters and she had a littler last year on Blue Buffalo puppy food. Her pups had terrible stools and she had many vet visits to get them cleared up (picture 12 Irish pups). The vet said she should switch them to Eukanuba Puppy (an Iams product). My mom is all into very holistic foods and she was very apprehensive about doing this, but after trying all the "good" brands of puppy food she finally went to Eukanuba Puppy. The pups cleared right up and did great.

My mom was not subsidized at all with purchasing the food. Now, I am not promoting Eukanuba, just relaying an interesting story of my experience. There are a lot of breeders that feed this brand of puppy food and swear by it.

Zulu is on Wellness Core Grain Free. So far so good. If you sign up on their web site, they will send you a $3.00 coupon every month.

I have finally decided on Fromms. It is what the breeder is feeding the pups now, and what she feeds her adults. Looks like on-line ordering is my only option, si I'll have to be sure to stay on top of the supply.

bkzoo, I like Fromm's too. It is hard to find, but a store on my route to the office has it. Justus was on it the first year and did well. Fromm Gold. I know the new puppy will be on it when she comes home.

I was actually pleasently surprised to find 4 local independent pet supply stores that carry Fromms! (I'm sure it helps to live in the state where it is produced) This will be so much easier than ordering on-line. Now I just need to hit them all to find the best pricing.

Oreo's breeder feeds them Eukanuba puppy, so I purchased a bag to start him off on.

He poops three times a day, morning, mid day and evening. His poops are nicely formed, and he seems to do great on this food. I was surprised at how HUGE the kibbles are. They are like 4 times larger than my girls Fromm.

So, my dilemma is, do I not fix something that isn't broke? I know that Eukanuba is far from the best quality food for him, but he is doing really well on it and so many breeders use it with success.

Hmm......

My dogs are now on 50/50 TOTW puppy & Acana Ranchland. They now have the firmest stool I have ever seen! Not constipated and straining just firm. This is an additional perk as the shepherd tends to get full (not impacted) anal glands and then when he spooks at something he leaves a mess. Liking the extra firm gland evacuation assistance on his part.

I did end up using the TOTW bag I had but I noticed that when I opened it it smelled almost smoky. Really odd. Sticking with Acana. Dogs seem to like it a lot.
