Puppy Food

Anything besides this that is imported here is insanely expensive. Local made stuff isn't cheap either...and not so sure if I trust the local stuff.

I think that the Kirkland dog food is decent. It is made by Diamond, if I remember correctly. Diamond had a big recall a few years ago (we fed Taste of the Wild at that time also a Diamond product).

Yeah, I heard about the recall....the same review website gives a less favorable review to their adult dog food and I've seen some complaints with that. (though, maybe it has improved since?)
 
I pulled this from the dog food advisor website. "Like with human food recalls, dog food recalls are inevitable and unpredictable. So, your only defense is to stay informed."

I use Taste of the Wild and know many people who do still use it. I feel in the area I live in, this is the best available food I can get at a resonable price. I had thought to do a raw diet but it is very hard to get the items I need here to make sure Cleo has a balanced diet. If Kirkland is the best available for you, and your dog is doing well on it, I don't see why you can't buy it. If you want to know more about this product you can look on this site.

I would love your votes on a good food to feed our Sheltie puppy, born Aug. 2 (so 4 months yesterday).

Here's background:

I have a 10-yr old male that had such a sensitive belly in the beginning. We tried many different brands of kibble ... over time we found Solid Gold and he was on Wee Bits until fully grown when we switched to Hund & Flocken (which he does fine on).

Given this history, we transitioned the pup to Solid Gold Wee Bits when we brought him home. I'm really not liking how he's doing on it though. Seems to be a bit itchy and too much waste that is often too soft.

Based on details within this thread, I was thinking we should try Acana, Canidae or Fromms Gold. Only apprehension on Fromms is that they get 4 stars (vs. 5) on the Dog Food Advisor site. Canidae has great reviews on the consumer affairs site - but they seem big and mass production is a bit of a concern too.

I have tried all different kinds of kibble for my Cleo before I got one that worked for her. Keep in mind that every Sheltie is different. You need to make sure they like the food that is given to them. Check the quality of food for your pup. I think anything 4 stars and up on dog food advisor is a good quality food (always read the label).

I'm not big on high protein food unless they are going to be a performance dog. My Cleo did not handle high protein very well (Stool issues). Puppies I have also found can have softer stool than a normal adult. If you give them a little pumpkin with the food, that should help with that problem.

I would also stick with something grain free if he is starting to itch. I have heard Fromm is a good brand that has a grain free line and lots of our sheltie nation users do use this. I use Taste of the Wild as that is the only brand here that Cleo actually likes and is a good quality. But, she is also the only sheltie I know that is a picky eater!

Dog food advisor is a good place to start looking for a good dog food. Then look for the availability in your area for the food, unless you are willing to order online and it is available to ship to your area. Also look up the consumer reviews for the food and visit the site. Lots of good dog food sites have a section about the dog food, how it’s made and where they are located and such. I am big on researching stuff for my dog to make sure it is right for her so I hope this all helps some.

We went from Solid Gold Hund & Flocken to Acana Grasslands. We've been super happy with it.
 
I started with Blue Buffalo Live Formual-puppy. I decided it was a waste of money because Phoebe would spit out the little dark brown bits that constituted about 1/4 of the mix. I switched to Fromm's Gold puppy on the recommendation of a couple of breeders. She loves it.
 
My puppy is on Royal Canin but I will be transferring him over to a great food called Barking Heads Puppy Days. Its a kibble and I am so pleased that I found it. It is all natural, no unpronounceables in the ingredients list! I did a lot of research into raw and home cooked feeding over the last few months and this is something I found during that research process. Its less time consuming but still excellent nutrition. Not sure if you can get it there! Now I just have to hope he likes it! :wink2:
 
Spirit is on a raw diet because she has such a sensitive stomach - and as a puppy was fairly picky about foods. She adores the raw food and gobbles it up at every meal.
