me and Pico driving in a big loop from CA through Canada, the Midwest, and the Southwest stopping off to see family along the way. Will try and get some decent walks in at least once every 2 days while driving from place to place.
He's gonna hate me!

I should start a pool on how often he howls at me from the backseat :)
 
Yeah as Sharon7 says. How do you carry him in the car? Would he do better in the front passenger seat- strapped in of course? We took our crew to the groomers the other day and for the first time our big guy whined?? Never did that before- maybe he thot we were taking him somewhere, dropping him off beside the road with a FOR FREE sign around his neck. He seemed happy to be at the groomers instead. He also whined just briefly when we started to roll coming home. Since then both of them have been lapador retrievers.. I hope they know they will not be abandoned. I hope your pup settles into the new routine, wow rest stops and all that pee mail to read what an adventure. Glad you get to take him along, if he protest just tell him what kennel life would be like......this is going to be a lot more fun. I somehow feel this kind of thing helps you bond better- you both get to share an adventure- drive safe and good luck- let the fun begin.
 
Pico has a setup in the back seat. 2 stacked dog beds and lots of toys. In the middle, of course, so he can see me.
So far he does fine, but this is very different so I know there will be 'moments'.
His toys tend to end up on the floor so I am thinking I will have more in the front seat I can toss him just in case.
 
It sounds like a road trip will be lots of fun although it might be awhile before Pico is used to the monotony!
Piper is my best road trip dog…all he wants to do is sleep…he’s such a vegetable in the car (I call him my couch potato lol). Finnie is ok on a long drive and he certainly enjoys looking out the windows whereas Blueberry would be the worst (of course lol) with the main reason she still gets car sick and she cries…omg you’d think I was hurting her lol.
Hopefully Pico is somewhere between Piper and Finnie and nothing like Blueberry!

I have never had a Sheltie in all my crews that liked riding in the car.. the current crew tolerates it but no long trips so far. The male whines for a few minute then is quiet. We have ours in harnesses and buckled to the head rest so they can move a bit but won't get thrown about if that happens. I always wondered why and then I rode the TJV fast train in France with the train traveling 130+ miles per hour. You/I could not look out the window at nearby object they went by so fast and I would get almost sick if I tried. Since Shelties are such observant dogs- detail/change is everything, I wonder if cars to them are like the TJV was for me? We used to use crates and they didn't like them but at least they were snuggled up and slept still it was always "oh no please no pleeeeaaase don't make me" they had a good time when we got where we were going but when it came time to leave they were "no I can live with these folks, I promise to be good, don't make me pllleaaaaassse" all over again.. we humans are just so cruel and inconsiderate.

When I got Piper I had to take him to the breeder almost weekly he was so good at getting the tape out of one ear. I placed the crate in the front seat (airbags turned off) and I’d reach my hand in and pat him as I drove. It was a 45 minute drive there and another 45 minutes back. I really think that why he’s so good in the car (in a parking lot he’s HORRIBLE) although we’ve never done a much longer drive. Blueberry still gets car sick (3 1/2) so I understand why she doesn’t enjoy it. I was however amazed a few days ago when she actually jumped into the car on her own for the first time!
I usually have to have her on a leash or its ring around the car lol. This time I’d gotten the other dogs in the car and she was near the front of the car. If I went towards her she went to the other side. I’d opened the rear door, she went around to the other side when suddenly I heard a noise and it was her jumping in the car!!!
Now if only she’d stop throwing up!
 
Elijah does not like the car at ALL even though 99% of the time we are going somewhere fun, NOT to the vet! He drools a bit but it's not car sick, he drools when he's anxious. Faith is a champ at traveling, she usually settles right in. Meadow bounces all over the back seat annoying everyone, but she will jump right into the car herself.
 
With Sca and even Spitfire I would take them to the vet, go in get treats and pets then leave. Vet techs laughed the first time but thought it was a great idea. Angus was OK but was a Wuhan plague dog so not much traveling.
