Puppy Trouble

I guess at this point any news but bad news is good news, if that makes any sense.

Keeping fingers crossed that there truly is good news in the next 48 hours.

We're with you hoping and praying for the best, Matt, and that the next call brings good news on Maggie. I can't imagine how hard it must be not to be able to see her and call regularly! Thank you for the update. We are all very concerned.

St. Francis you are desperately needed by Maggie

Please watch over and protect little Maggie, St. Francis. Her Daddy is worried sick over her and all our prayers are asking to please pull this little Sheltie, Maggie, to good health. I ask this on behalf of all Our Forum Members for this healing. Amen.

Some Good News

The vet called at 10am and said Maggie has improved, she is alert and perky- the vets wording. They are even going to try to give her some food this afternoon. When I saw "SPG VET" on the caller ID my heart dropped and just assumed the worse, glad I answered though. There are 7 veterinarians at this clinic and I think we have talked to 4 of them now, seems to be a different one every day, could be due to the long weekend to. So it's good news, not out of the woods yet. The Dr said that she will have to remain at the clinic for a few days yet and we can go in tomorrow to take a peak at her but are unable to touch her. The vets worried about us spreading the virus, a little disappointed but completely understandable.
Hey Emmygirl, Maggie’s 9 weeks old now.
Hi MissSuzie, Monday is a Civic holiday in Canada, usually called August Long weekend. My dad grew up on a farm and he also said that they always called the smallest of the litter a runt. Maybe the breeder was just trying to put a better sounding spin on "the runt".
Tomorrow the clinic resumes normal hours, so I can get Maggie updates through out the day instead of pacing around the house waiting for a phone call. We have soaked her bedding and all of her toys in bleach and anywhere she went to the bathroom was also doused in bleach. The vet told us bleach is the best way to kill Parvo and to bleach anywhere Maggie has thrown up, gone to the bathroom or slept.
The breeder is still emailing us as she is still at a dog show and told us that it could be possible she caught Parvo through her Parvo shot when she received it last Monday and also said that symptoms would show up 72 hours after the shot. The symptoms showed up 48 hours after the shot, Wednesday evening.
Thank you so much every body for your support, I like to think that it is contributing to Maggie’s recovery. If anyone has tips or advice for cleaning Maggie's bedding and toys or if we should just get a new ones it would be appreciated, we have soaked everything in bleach multiple times.

Thank you all so very much
Matt

I'm so happy you got good news. Hopefully Maggie will get better quickly and be able to be back at home with you.

Matt, I just saw this thread, and my heart was in my mouth the whole was through until your last entry. I was praying, Dear God, take care of Maggie. Thank God she is recovering. My heart goes out to you -- please keep us posted on how she does -- every little bit of news means so much to those of us who love through Shelties.

Oh my gosh...poor you, and poor Maggie.

I am a little confused though...and maybe I just missed a post. You mentioned a stool sample, and bloodwork. Did the results for Parvo come back "positive" for Parvo? When our boy Baron was a pup of almost 6 months..and just came home to us...he ended up having a sore throat/minor throat infection from the tube down his throat during his neutering. We rushed him to emergency (of course on a holiday weekend...), because of vomiting/diahrea, and gagging/dry heaves. The first thing they did was test him for Parvo. The results were with us almost instantly. This is why I ask if the test results came back positive on Parvo? If not, I'm wondering if it might have something to do with the diet since it all re-started after she ate again?

Like I said...I might have missed something in this thread. Just got back from vacation, and my mind isn't "adjusted" yet ;-).

I pray the next post on her has the best of news!

Hi Noneeds4me, I read back through my Saturday post and I did not directly tell the results of the stool sample and blood work. It did turn out to be Parvo and to get the results of the samples only took about half an hour. Sorry for the confusion, I don't think I was in a very calm state of mind when I wrote that.
Thank you everyone for the support
Matt

Matt

I'm so sorry for your traumatic weekend. I just got back from the long weekend at the cottage and caught your thread!

Why do these things ALWAYS happen when its a long weekend, and your regular vet is unobtainable.

I'm going out on abit of a limb here, but your breeder sounds a little defensive....I think someone posted earlier that PARVO should be vaccinated at 5-6 weeks. That would make sense if it takes 7-10 days for the vaccine to kick in. By vaccinating the same day as you took her home that seems a little off to me.

In the end, it doesn't matter as long as little Maggie pulls through. The boys and I are crossing fingers and paws! Best wishes!
