Putting toys back in toy box?

Hi all,

I try to continue to teach my smart Sheltie new things and hope to teach him how to put his toys back in his toy box. Any thoughts on the best way to go about this? I am thinking a drop command.

Lol, yeah our house looks like a day care but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I just always try to teach Cody something new to keep him from getting bored.

Shelties are too smart and it would be a waste to not exercise their intelligence.

I started working on traing Missy to do this but never followed through. The first part is teaching them how to retrieve. So I can point to a toy and tell Missy to get it, and she'll bring it to me. If I'm sitting next to the toy box, I can tap it and tell her to drop it. The problem is, once she has a toy, she wants to play with it, not put it away! She's very dependent on my commands and motions, which is what I mean by I never followed through, lol. So anyways, that's my thoughts on it.
 
Yes, do the get - bring it to box - drop. Once that is set, you can do directed get - put it in box - drop.

My floor looks like a daycare too.
 
My dogs have me trained very well at it :biggrin2: but I was researching for a toy box and found this project: http://thetidydog.com/ it's a toy box that gives your dog treats for returning the toy, making them want to do it over and over again. There's a switch so you can turn off the training if you want. Seems pretty cool. It's not out yet, I read it's coming out in November, but you can preorder. Might be something I try in the future.

Our shelties would be so fat.. they would catch on quickly!

Here's a brief article I found. I guess I was on the right path.. it's basically a retrieve and a drop command. You just have to work on it long enough to combine everything so they know when you tell them to clean up (or whatever command), they know it means go get toys and drop them in the box.

Shelties are too smart for that. Mine would figure out that all they had to do is pick up the same toy and drop it to get food. :biggrin2:

I'd be happy just teaching them not to roll the tennis balls under the sofa. :rolleyes2:

:lol: I hear you on the tennis ball!! Ruutu refuses to play with any other tennis ball but his (ratty old thing that was actually Honey's and doesn't even squeak) yet I have 3 brand new ones....

The new ones haven't been properly "seasoned"... :ick
