Good Morning All....I awoke at 5:15 to the sound of thunder. Being a good dog person, I thought of wet dogs, (yuck). A quick peek out the window, and no rain yet. So, I nudged the dogs awake, fed them and got them outside before it really started pouring. The rain started while I was feeding. I could tell by their sleepy eyes that they weren't happy to be outside with water dripping down on their heads. But, neither was I!
Racheal brought up some good points. But over the years I have seen, up close and personal, some of the Futurity winners. Unless they come from the 6-9mo class, the WINNERS (Best in Futurity, and class winners) are pretty much set for where they will end up size wise. Here I am talking about overall size and balance. If the puppy is right up there in height, then it is either out of balance, meaning high on leg with a light head, or balanced with a huge head, to match the overall body size, for their age. They appear clunky and heavy headed.
Best in Futurity Winner CH Woodbridge Anything Goes, was a lovely bitch that lived with us, and Megan trained. CH Sunaire Oppulance and Bling is breath taking, and continues her steller career. I think we see that the over-done puppies, that are mature beyond their age in the classes, but I can't think of one that has won the whole thing. Both Robbie (CH Rabbit Run Maritime) and Checkers (Rabbit Run Game Face) won their classes, and are moderate sized adults.
Now, there is the ILLUSION of overdone, when you see them from ringside. Certain handlers groom these bloom-y puppies as Don King look-a-likes. You wonder how they were able to walk through a doorway and not bump the sides with their ruffs! (only kidding). But if you go over them on the table or stand right over them, you see it is mostly hair. AOAC puppies usually have more bloom, and tend to mature earlier, so for me, those are the ones that come to mind.
I would describe the Futurity as a concentration of quality.

Thankfully, we're in a lull now which we hope will hold until everyone's morning chores are done.
You're right, Sumac...shopping is fantastic here. And it seems if you aren't showing, you're shopping! People are three deep at the vendors, and much of the merchandise sells out quickly.
It was great fun and so educational watching the Futurity. There are some stunning puppies, and it's so interesting seeing the different types. Megan and Izzy made a beautiful picture, and Izzy looked terrific. She stacked and gaited and did a great job for Megan who, I'm convinced, could handle a kangaroo and win. She is a superb handler.
