Rash on Snout

Our first sheltie had much similar lesions on his belly but he was hypothyroid. They were diagnosed as a staph infection because of his compromised immune system. Just a thought.
 
Diagnosis

The rash on Milo's belly turned out to be a staph infection. The vet gave Milo a shot of antibiotics and told my Mom to return in a couple of weeks.

Milo had blood work done a few months ago so our vet thought it might be premature to do blood work again. We're going to see if the antibiotics clear the infection, then do blood work if it doesn't.

We're really not sure how he ended up with this infection either since he's not around other animals except my parent's cat and he's in the house most of the time. Some flea dirt was found on him so the thinking is he might have gotten the infection from the fleas.
 
Update on Milo's Staph Infection

Shortly after receiving his first antibiotic shot two weeks ago I was brushing Milo and discovered that the staph infection had spread to the cyst Milo has on his leg (he's had this cyst for a long time). The cyst looked really sore and my Mom was horrified that she hadn't noticed it before.

Milo went for his follow up appointment on Monday where the vet gave him another shot of antibiotics. Most of the rash was gone and the cyst looked much better, though nothing had completely cleared up. We're pretty sure that everything should clear up with this second shot.

Poor Milo, I feel bad that he had to go through this. I'm still concerned that this happened and that there's not something else going on with him... :fl
 
Worried Again

My mother called me today and said that Milo is getting worse again. He has new spots on his belly and his eyes are getting crusty.

He had a shot of antibiotics a week ago that was supposed to last for two weeks.

The vet says that sometimes a staph infection can rebound like this and to wait and see how he is tomorrow.

We're very worried and don't think this is going to clear up tomorrow. We're of the opinion that if the vet doesn't want to do something about this tomorrow, that we're going to take him to see someone else for a second opinion.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Our little man will be 12 this July, until now he's always been so healthy so we're so worried about him. :(
 
My Mom got a second antibiotic for Milo, which cleared up the rash on his belly and in his cyst completely.

But now he has a new, scaly rash around his eyes. We noticed this with the first antibiotic and it got worse the longer he was on the second antibiotic.

He's been off of the antibiotics for a week or more but the flaky skin around his eyes isn't getting better.

The vet wants to take a skin scraping of the new rash and told my mom it might be an autoimmune disease that shelties get. All I could think of is demodectic mange from a weak immune system, but this doesn't look like mange to me (though I'm DEFINITELY not an expert.). There's no hair loss and it doesn't look red, just very crusty/flaky.

Does anyone know what my vet might be talking about?
 
I couldn't pull up the picture but it sounds like Solar Nasal Dermatitis (Collie Nose). I read about it when I was studying to be a vet. It's most common in collie and breeds related to them. Like I said I was just studying but have decided on a different carer. So I'm no expert. Here's a link for it encase your interested.

In theory it sounds like it, but it doesn't seem likely this is the case with Milo.

If you read the thread you'll see that he had a bacterial infection, which was the initial rash on the nose and the staph on his belly. His eyes didn't get crusty until he started the 3rd and 4th round of antibiotics. The rash on his nose, then belly were completely different than what is now around his eyes.

He's also almost 12 so you would think he would have had this sensitivity much earlier in his life, if it iss indeed a sensitivity to the sun?

Interesting read, I've never heard of that before. Milo does have white around his eyes, which would mean that his skin is pink in those areas...so no pigment...
 
Snoopy's Nose rash

My 4 yr old sheltie's nose also developed what I though was a rash. It gradually turned mostly pink from all black and started to get crusty. He spends a lot of time outside and originally thought it was from the sun. It happened gradually and when I noticed it crusting I immediately took him to the vet. After looking at him and looking at her medical books, she thought it might be canine lupus. We had him on a steroid for a month and it cleared up. We decided to see how he did for another month. I also kept putting baby sunscreen on his nose. After another month off the steroids it starting crusting again. I took him back to the vet and one of the other Doctors looked at him. She herself has lupus and after looking at it, said she agreed that it was canine lupus. She gave me a topical ointment to use until it cleared up and to use when it flared up again and recommended a special sunscreen to use. She also said we can do a biopsy to be 100% sure, but I am holding off on doing that because the treatment wouldn't change.
