Rash on Snout

In theory it sounds like it, but it doesn't seem likely this is the case with Milo.

If you read the thread you'll see that he had a bacterial infection, which was the initial rash on the nose and the staph on his belly. His eyes didn't get crusty until he started the 3rd and 4th round of antibiotics. The rash on his nose, then belly were completely different than what is now around his eyes.

He's also almost 12 so you would think he would have had this sensitivity much earlier in his life, if it iss indeed a sensitivity to the sun?

Interesting read, I've never heard of that before. Milo does have white around his eyes, which would mean that his skin is pink in those areas...so no pigment...

How is Milo doing now?

How is Milo doing now?

I groomed and bathed Milo this weekend for my parents so got a good look at him.

The staph infection seems to be cleared up. His cyst still hasn't returned to how it used to look and still looks kind of pink, but it also didn't look irritated and infected. I think we'll have to keep a close eye on it.

Milo's eyes weren't as crusty as they were, but they also didn't look any better, just different. The best way I can describe the areas around his eyes are scaly/scaby. My mom plans on bringing him to the vet in the next week or so.

I didn't like how Milo's skin looked. I noticed the last time I groomed him that his skin was flakier than usual and this time it was pretty bad too. I don't know if this is a separate issue or if its somehow connected to everything else that's been going on with him

I tried using a gentle oatmeal based shampoo but it didn't seem to be cleaning him well. After two shampoos I switched to my usual Mane and Tail shampoo and had most of the flakes gone in no time. I also used conditioner and left it a bit longer than usual in hopes that it would condition his skin too.

He's not in any immediate danger and doesn't seem to have any discomfort (that I saw anyway), but I'm still worried about him. I just have this suspicious feeling that there is something wrong with him. :confused2:

I'll keep bugging my mother to bring him to the vet sooner than later. :(

Update

Most of Milo's skin did clear up, but he ended up at the vets again with some sort of a rash on the end of his p*nis. Poor Milo! I can't imagine how uncomfortable that must have been for him. :(

He also had this strange crustiness around his eyes.

The vet prescribed a cream cleared up the new rash and the crust around his eyes did eventually go away on its own. I guess the vet was right, it was a strange side effect of the antibiotic.

He's been healthy now for approx. 4 weeks, what a relief! :biggrin2:

Good Call Tabitha! Collie Nose!

I couldn't pull up the picture but it sounds like Solar Nasal Dermatitis (Collie Nose). I read about it when I was studying to be a vet. It's most common in collie and breeds related to them. Like I said I was just studying but have decided on a different carer. So I'm no expert. Here's a link for it encase your interested.

I hope he gets better! :hugs
Tabs

Milo's snout rash has come back. :(

My mother told me that last summer the vet had mentioned if it came back that he might have an autoimmune disease, but that's all she could tell me.

I'd heard of collie nose before and seen an extreme case on a rescue dog, but didn't know it was an auto immune disease and actually had it mixed up with demodectic mange.

My mom mentioned that it reminded her of lupus, (which is what collie nose is) so I did a Google search and Bingo! All of these photos of noses that look exactly like Milo's.

Way to go Tabitha! You called it! Great start to your veterinary career. :smile2:

I guess the staph infection that he had must have occurred because of the flare up Milo was having at the time.

My next question is, does anyone have any words of wisdom for treating this? Has anyone treated this naturally?

I'm surprised that there isn't more information on the forums about collie nose treatment, since shelties are predisposed.

Hoping that you get a line on this. Poor little Milo. I was not aware of Collie Nose nor of it's relationship to lupus. Is that lupus the same as people lupus?

I wish that I could be more helpful.

Please keep us all posted,

Short prayer list for Milo tonight,

Hugs,
Kate

Lupus

My 4 year old Sheltie developed a rash on his nose last year and all the black turned to a red rash. The vet (who also has lupus) said it looked like lupus. she showed me some pictures of it. she said a biopsy was the only way to tell for sure but I don't want to put him through that. So far it is only affecting his nose. She put him on a steroid for 7 days and it helped a little.
she gave me a steroid ointment to put on it, but I am not at home right now so I can't say what it is. He does try to lick it off.
It hasn't gone away but it isn't getting worse.
I hope you can get help for Milo.
Joan
