Re-homing my Sheltie, and terribly distressed!

Thanks again for your comments everyone.

I have an update to report. My friend's mother is also interested. We've been communicating through email. She already has a sheltie, who is 9 years old. She actually got her current sheltie from the same breeder as me, and the one she had before as well! This should bode well with the breeder. Which I will certainly notify.

She wants company for her sheltie, and also thinks it will make things easier for her when her sheltie passes away (since he's older). This really sounds like a good fit, and I like that since she's my friend's mother, I will always be able to know that Largo is OK. We've arranged that the two shelties meet in 2 weeks time. Everything depends on them liking each other, so I'm quite nervous about it! First we will see how they react to each other, then I'll ask more questions. Largo generally gets along with other dogs, but once in a blue moon he's unpredictably mean. It's random, and it happens with 1 in 20 dogs. It's never happened with another Sheltie, or another dog of a similar breed. It's happened with bit bulls (go figure) and much smaller dogs.

So, this weekend we're going to see the people in the country and the weekend after, my friend's mom.

But, I'm worried that he'll be traumatized for life

I got my Sheltieboy at the age of one, from a reputable breeder. His previous life was a good one, an indoor dog that was part of the breeder's pack. Rehoming went smoothly, and he didn't act the least bit traumatized.

That sounds promising with your friend's mother. Hopefully they will get along, altho some dogs do prefer to be only children.

We've arranged that the two shelties meet

Just a tip -- when you are having two adult dogs meet, meet on neutral ground like a park or something LEASHED and go for a leashed walk together. Something happens nice with dogs walking calmly together. I had two Aussies meet this way and it was the very best ever. However, if one of the dogs or both has/have leash aggression, that might not work.

Then, on a second day, try taking the dog to the home with the dog after they have met and talked on a walk.

Very good advice! This new adopter seems more promising! Wishing you the best!!! Shelties seem to like their own kind... Here's hoping all goes well. :fl

I agree that the lady who already has a sheltie from the same breeder sounds very promising. Good luck!

Please contact the breeder and let her know your situation. She can help and will have a vested interest in making sure that Largo gets placed in a good home. The new situation sounds promising. Fingers crossed the 2 dogs like each other. If you still need help, contact Sheltie Ontario Rescue. We take dogs from Quebec on a regular basis and they are fostered until the right home comes along.

Jiming at almost the end ( I hope )

It takes great maturity to decide that you don't have the cycles to take care of a particular dog. And it takes extra maturity to go the extra mile and find our forum to get help to find the right place for your pup.

it would have been so easy just to post on kiijjii and be done with it. And I thank you for seeking advice from the forum. I don't really have much more to add that has not already been said.

I just wanted to say that Im so glad you even asked the question here. Any maybe there is a member on the forum in a position to adopt....
