Running with shelties?

Does anyone here run with their shelties? I mean intentionally go for a run with them, not after them:wink2:. I've been thinking about starting running again and it would be fun to take Olive with me. I figure it would have two bonuses (besides the fun, I actually like running): my getting in better shape, and Olive working out more of her crazies outside of the house. Walks only accomplish so much, you know?

Never seen anyone jogging with a sheltie around here, but at my office a guy runs around the neighborhood with two BCs everyday. He looks about ready to tip over; the dogs are still full-speed:lol:.

How old is Olive? I'm not 100% sure, but I believe I once read that you shouldn't run with your dog until he/ she is fully grown. For a Sheltie that would be 12-18 months old. This is because their bones arent fully developed and running for an extended period can affect their growth.

I also heard you shouldn't run your dog on cement. It can cause joint issues.

I would love to run with my dog, but she gets very wound up from running. It makes her more reactive than she normally is.

I have jogged with my sheltie before - it was actually great. My jog was a nice fast trot for him.

I tried to. I got about halfway through and I was dragging Trax behind me! Seems that he has bursts of speed but has no long term stamina.

When Beau sees someone he loves, he runs full tilt down the street with me at the other end, huffing and puffing, I'd pay good money for some one to video tape that. I'm sure its pretty funny, but, to their credit no one has ever laughed, but, I sure would

Olive and I used to do the Bear Trail in Waco but now that we've moved nothing has really happened as classes picked up. It wasn't so much a run as power walk since I have reoccurring tendonitis in both knees and she was still only around a year. She really enjoyed it since it was summer session and there were very few people around, just lots of (mean) squirrels.

I agree with what's been said above. I've read online that you should never run with any dog until they are fully grown because it damages their joints. If she's an adult Sheltie then perhaps you could give it a try. Starting small and building up slowly would be the best way to do it.

I wish that I could even walk at a faster pace as Grace has so much more energy than me and I find it hard to keep up. But I am a lot fitter than I used to be, so maybe by the time Grace is old enough, I'll be able to start jogging too. :D

I would wait until she's at least a year old before running with her.

Two of my shelties really enjoy jogging with me, one hates it for some reason. Some dogs do get quite wound up by the running though.

My sister jogs with Shelby a few times a week. They go about 1/2 to 3/4 mile (combined out and back) on our small country road. He seems to like it and she says he keeps pace and just goes along next to her. He is 10 months. Some of it is pavement and some is on grass. The distance is so short that it is not very indicative of an actual longer jog for getting in shape, but he is one Sheltie that likes jogging, they are out there :smile2:
