Running with shelties?

I wasn't aware that running with a pup could hurt their joints but I have heard that for large dog breeds specifically. I actually started running with Riley, though my version of running is 5-ish mins around the park. In terms of control, he's pretty good, doesn't get too excited and slows down when I do. He does get distracted if he sees another dog or sometimes decides he wants to sniff a tree.. Hopefully, when he gets older and I build more stamina we can go for longer runs!

I walk quite quickly to begin with as my legs are really long and my strides are apparently really big. Precious and I walk pretty quick but if I run, she takes it as play and gets really wound up by it and hops and barks happily while staring at me :P Hence why she barks at joggers, not all the time as she's a lot better with moving things now (cars, bikes, etc). But she doesn't prefer it as it gets her really excited. I can 'JOG' to the point that her feet are still 'walking', fast walking, but if she starts galloping and her motion changes to a run, I slow down when I hike as I don't want her 'running' while on rough terrain. I prefer walking anyways while out there and taking my time :P That probably doesn't answer your question but just wanted to give my two cents with my experience of jogging with my sheltie!

That actually makes a lot of sense, her taking it as play when you run. I'll have to think about that with Olive - I've been working with her to not see my feet as Evil Squirrels Attached to Hooman Legs when I shuffle them; running may be counterproductive.

Olive was a year old Nov 13. Even if I start running with her at some point, we'll both have to work up our stamina. Assuming we get enough snow, she'll be coming snow-shoeing with me, and that's workout enough for me and probably for her, too.

Yes! That's exactly how I thought too, that it might be counter productive as I had to work a lot to keep Precious' over excitement under control. I try to do things that are calmer overall, as it's a better balance for us, for Precious. Her level of excitement is connected to her bark too so she barks when she runs, I don't encourage that either too much :P I definitely would have jogged with my last sheltie, who was MUCH milder and calmer in personality overall right from a puppy, but unfortunately she wasn't very healthy so that wasn't an option of activity to share together. But mmm overall, if you really do want to take up jogging, I'm sure you can train towards it. It wasn't too high on my list of things to get done with Precious, as again I prefer walking over jogging anyways, so it worked for us. Do what works for you, try it a little bit if you want to see if you like it, together. Thats all the advice and good luck I can give :) Best of luck!

Olive here: This is your official notice. You are on my List. You have suggested to my hooman that I work for her. Phhpppttt.

Olive's hooman here: LOVE IT!!!! I keep telling Olive if I have to haul all her stuff with me on walks, she needs to pull her weight. Maybe she should just pull mine... :biggrin2: I think she's a little small though (25lbs). Seriously, has anyone done this with a sheltie? I'd love to see pictures!

I request cookies for Olive, please:smile2:

seriously, if I lived up north, The CranDix would be doing this:yes:

I haven't let my sheltie pull me on skis, but on flat areas while biking with her I've let her be responsible for the forward momentum. She doesn't even seem to notice.

The weather is finally warm enough here for enjoyable jogging.

Sammy and I went out 2 days in a row, we jogged for about 1.5miles in 15 minutes. It was slow enough that Sammy didn't need to get into her running mode, she just walked quickly for the most part.

Jogging is actually one of the main reasons for getting a dog, I needed a jogging companion.

In the coming weeks / months, the distance will be increased to about double, but the speed will stay about the same.

My husband runs with our 10-month-old Sammy every day. Sam loves it. He tends to react to cars when walking but is all business when he's running. Hubby ran daily with our large Lab/Setter all her life, and she lived for 14 years without a hint of joint trouble. Janet
