Scary, and it could have been us!

So sorry for all the dogs and injured people and those who are now scared to walk around their neighborhood.I have been in this situation myself way too many times . Just not fair to dogs or humans. All people have to do is care- why is that SO HARD ??:gaah
 
What a terrible event! But it happens with pit bulls every day, it seems, in my area. We recently had a case against a pit bull owner because his dog literally bit off the arm of a 5 year old girl at the shoulder. Very gruesome.

This is the reason I don't walk Bela and Gracie in my neighborhood any more. We have at least four pit bull owners who think nothing of letting their dogs out to menace the neighborhood early each morning. I've been cornered by this pack of seven twice. Got them by surprise with a pellet gun. I'm ashamed to say I also got a couple of them in the butt as they fled the scene. Wish it had been the owners.

What good are leash laws when they're a)not enforced; and b)preventing legally leashed dogs from getting away from unleashed dogs that attack? These owners think they are above the law.
 
This isn't just a pit bull incident. Beau' one and only friend is a pit bull and he's really a sweet loving dog.

This is all about the dog owner. I know because about three weeks ago, my baby and I were on the corner talking to a friend of mind who is a crossing guard. My baby was lying calmly on the sidewalk. This "lady"(I'm using the term loosely) comes walking by once, Beau does nothing, Second time the same thing. I had my back turned talking to an older gentleman in the neighborhood and she practically walked right on top of him with her dog. She didn't even say excuse me. Well Beau reacted(which was normal) She was after all right in his face (at least her dog was) and then she's going to tell me my dog is aggressive. I was like Shut the F up. I see her a few days later Beau and I are up against someone's house. Her dog is barking at the both of us and she refuses to pull him closer to her. Again, the same thing this morning.

I've told her several times my dog does not like dogs to be right in his face and she refuses to acknowledge and lets him be right there. This morning I see her pull Beau aside give her plenty of room and still she looks the other way and allows her dog to be right in Beau' personal space on the sidewalk.

I'm thinking about writing her address down and reporting it to animal control that way if he does something I can have a record of her stupidity.
 
And I forgot to mention the owners dog is a chihuahua. People seem to think that small dogs should be allowed to do what ever they want to do.

And last weekend while I was walking Beau in a different direction, I had another woman, tell me I couldn't walk on her street because her two dogs were there. I'm not kidding. This would probably account for the perfectly foul mood that I'm in. Seriously, I can't walk on your block because your dogs are outside. I'm starting to think that I need to carry a piece of paper and pen to write down these addresses and report these owners. Or is it just me?:dead::gaah
 
That's part of the point I was trying to make; it's not just pit's. The owner of the min pin made a comment that "oowwww, she's afraid of an 8 lb dog". I didn't say it but my thought was; I'm not afraid of the dog, I'm afraid of owners that can't/won't :rolleyes2: hold on to them!
 
Sharon, I'm so glad that you and the girls are okay. My heart goes out to the woman who was attacked.

I hope that something is done.
 
Update from my neighbor lady who was bitten - Animal Control told her the dog would be returned (!!!) to the owners when they proved it could not escape the yard - apparently it dug out from under the fence. Sooooo, how do they PROVE it can't get out again? AC told her basically the owners had another chance, "but if it happens again..."

Well, what then? Another person/animal hurt or killed. Unbelievable. She is taking my advice to find the property owner/landlord and send him a registered letter advising him of his tenant's dangerous dog. I think she should send that person her medical bills as well. I suspect if the owner gets the idea a lawsuit may be in the offing, that he will do something about his tenant.

Best part of the story, it is apparently a female pit, who was wearing "diapers", so obviously in heat. Opens up a whole 'nother line of thinking, eh?

She had her arm in a sling. Her dog is OK and she thinks because his coat is so thick (part Chow) that it saved him. She told me it took 4 people to pull the Pit off her dog. :eek2:

I meet a lot of Pit Bulls at the shelter where I volunteer so I don't automatically think they are all terrible but really, this dog is a menace.
 
Each breed of a dog comes with genetic traits that sway the dog to certain things. The Sheltie is the herding and the "ball!!!!"; Beagles it is tracking, greyhounds it is chasing... Pits it is a aggressive defense (?).
Anyway, I know there are sweet pits that would never hurt a fly, and others that are dangerous. I worry about the instinctive traits that pops out and locks its jaws onto something,,,,
As Judge Wapner said during "Animal Court" (PARA PHRASED FROM Memory) In all my years of hearing these (dog) cases, its never a collie that bites the chIld, its always the same breeds'
 
Oh my! I'm so glad that you and your dogs are ok. Everything happens for a reason - good thing you hung around the house for a bit longer. :hugs

I do feel sorry for the poor lady and her dog - I hope they are doing alright!
