Shampoo

Great thread, guys!

Has anybody ever tried bringing their own shampoo to the groomer and asking him/her to use that, instead of what the groomer would normally use? I'm a little fragrance sensitive, and I find the shampoo they use overwhelming!

Yes I have. Be aware that they use a heap. The groomer went through about 1/3 of a bottle of shampoo (and it was meant to be watered down 10:1 with water anyway). I also took all my conditioners and coat rescue. It ended up costing quite a bit on top of the groom when I added how much plush puppy product had been used.

I did give instructions on how to use the products in case she didnt know what she was doing (which she didn't - that was the groomer who shaved Deska's mane).

I used to use Mane and Tail on my horses, and also on my hair, quite a few years ago. I must not have liked it all that much or I would have continued using it on my hair.

My mom has very thin hair and is balding in spots. Her hairstylist suggest she use Mane and Tail on her hair, because it makes it thicker.

From my personal experience with the Chris Christensen shampoo line it softens the hair. I even talked with a Professional Handler and she mentioned that fact. If you have a sheltie that has a naturally soft coat... Chris Christensen is not for you.
For those soft coats use 1 All Systems, Crisp Coat Shampoo. It is a really nice shampoo.
I also like the Plush Puppy line. They have some of the coolest products. Something for everyone. And, when I've used the Mousse at a show.... Mmmm it smells soooo good! :smile2: Not overpowering, just good. And, the smell last for days.

I've thought about Crisp Coat for Diva. I used to use it on Justice for a short time but he didn't need it when he got closer to 3yr. I notice in last month or so Diva's guard hairs are getting harder. Still no undercoat just a little. So maybe her adult coat will have the right texture.

You are right about if you use the line it does make the hair feel soft. Since she's just a house pet, I have no objection to the silky feel. But if would definitely be a no-no if you show.

But I wonder if it's not so much the shampoo as all the products you put on after. I washed her according to the CC system. The shampoo seemed to leave a normal feeling to the hair. The thick n thicker seemed to fluff her hair and it still had the course feel. However as soon as I applied the after bath it seemed to really become smooth. The next time I wash her I'm going to try the after bath then the thick n thicker. If you are wanting that true Sheltie hair feel, you would definetely not use the after bath product.

For those of you that LOVE a crisp clean smell, I would recommend Pet Silk (fresh scent) products! I'm a scent person too and I just love this. I started using it on my Maltese a few years ago and I love it! They also have a Pet Silk Liquid Silk finishing product I loved on my Maltese. It makes the fur a bit shiny and keeps tangles at bay. I haven't used any on Ember the sheltie yet as I have run out and need to get more, but I think it will work great! They have the shampoo and conditioner at Overstock.com at a good price. The Liquid Silk is a bit hard to find.

This may sound weird but I use good, old fashioned, blue Dawn dish soap on Edan. Actually, most of the local breeders use it because (1) it's inexpensive, (2) it does a GREAT job, and (3) is gentle on both the fur and skin. It's 100% safe for use on animals; in fact one of the commercials they run shows wild life rescue teams using Dawn to clean birds coated in oil. He actually smells fantastic when he's finished and, best of all, the smell is not overpowering.

No Silaria that is not weird at all. One of the family's hunting dogs got into something, and the knats bit the heck out of their female, then of course she scratched and made herself bloody. She isn't scratching anymore. At the emergency vets, who are excellent, told them to use the original blue Dawn. I use an oatmeal shampoo, and I am going to try the Dawn just to see what it does on mine. They don't have knats but it sounds great, and the recommendation came from someone with sensible knowledge.

The bugs are so bad around here, and how they are staying away from my two is just unreal. They release these da## ladybugs that are suppose to do something for the crops, and I don't have crops. So what are they doing around me. One almost went in my hub's ear, just call him CropHead I quess. Here come these black bugs with red on their backs, I have no idea what they are good for. When I rake leaves the knats fly by the hundreds. Spiders??? They were horrible this year!

For some reason thank god the bugs don't go on my dogs.

Great Info you gave!!!

Hi all. Been a lurker for awhile and this thread caught my eye and decided to join and offer my perspective.

I have been using the Bark 2 Basics brands on my dogs for years and absolutely love them. I am currently using the Skin Remedy one and love the gentleness and easy rinsing. Neither of our 2 Shelties are shown, they are our pets. I usually bathe them about every 3 weeks as they get fairly dirty playing outside in our backyard during the summer and a bit less often during the winter.

By the way, love the site and hope to add more to it.
