Shaving dilemma!!

I'm going to start a new thread on the shave or not to shave topic......I responded already to another post that you sent on your pup's shave......on a different thread
 
I've had both dogs shaved for various surgeries. Tully's back/butt and legs was shaved a year ago and it's still looking funky. That said, length wise I found both dogs took about 9 mths for it to grow back to the same length as the unshaved fur, although it should start looking okay by about 3mths.

As I mentioned in another thread, probably the most important thing you can do is keep the coat well groomed, removing undercoat. Sheltie guard hair grows on an angle, so when the undercoat and guard hair are the same length, or when the undercoat is blowing, the undercoat can twist around the guard hair as it grows. This creates a lot of matting and also can twist around the guard hair making it twist up too. Brush often to remove all loose undercoat, this will reduce matting and twisting and also allow air to circulate around the pores and promote healthier fur growth. Its particularly important as you come into Spring and the coat really blows. Fortunately, when the weather warms, with less energy spent on growing undercoat the guard hairs should grow faster.

I was so rattled ovee the weekend I actually called the groomer today and asked why he would shave my sheltie. He said it was in the best interest of the dog as ny sheltie had a few matted hairs from his skin condition sores where the blood dried. I think a bath and tidy would have been find as I really didnt need the groomer to cut the top of his hair at all. Ibjust wish the groomer wouldn't have made that decision and called us instead. Now my sheltie is fuzzy and curly hair.
I am hoping it will grow straight. I cant really brush a lot since he currently battling a skin condition with sores :(

Would you say it would be about 3-6 months before I even see his hair getting longer?

I don't know who did this to your dog,but what I do know is,I would be livid. not only would I make my case well known to management,but you would believe that everyone that walks thru the doors of this place..knew how much the so called "groomer" is not even qualified to hold a pair of scissors. My word, it is astounding,to think they took all that coat,and handed him back to you in that condition.
 
I am amazed at how many people end up with groomers shaving their shelties

I think it comes down to people not wanting to spend the time to work on matts or not knowing how. I have had to cut 2 out in 9 years (behind the ears), and I have gone 3-4 weeks without combing Gavin a few times. I know there are cases where shaving is necessary (like in rescue dogs from bad situations), but a few matts here and there can easily be worked out if you are patient.

But I know my baby is probably never going to a groomer! Keep those scary clippers away :D
