Shedding heavily in Fall?

That is only the first year. I meant be 15-18months of age it will look good or be getting better. The outer coat will continue to grow and the 2nd year will be less dramatic.

In conformation, 1yr to 18 months is the time alot of dogs are held out from showing. The fluffy puppy coat is no longer there and the adult coat isn't fully in. Jamie was a a pretty fluffy pup but looked darn right smooth just after a year. He is beginning to resemble a walking haystack now at 2.5yrs.

Someone forgot to tell this to Summer! She is 20 months old and she still looks bad.Her fur is just starting to come in, but I am betting she loses it again when she goes into heat next month. I would like to show her sometime, if she wasnt the hairless wonder!

Dang girls anyway. Diva is the same way. Season blow coat, puppies really blow coat, just get it back, season, puppies. naked again.

She had a pretty good undercoat going but she is due to go into season in 3 weeks so she is blowing it again(she is weird she sheds before her season). Sigh. It wouldn't be so bad but her coat is a bit soft(unlike my boys) so it does stand off as much. Her puppies however, do not seem to have this issue.

In heat and whelping bitches aside, our dogs tend to blow their quite a couple of times per year. Spring and Fall. Preparing for the summer and winter growth requirements.

That's the theory, at least as I understand it.

However there are other conditions that can cause blowing coat. Medical is one. Environment is another.

For my Bacca, who is hypothyroid, I suspect his meds are out of whack and he is blowing coat because of it. That's the medical.

My Indy who would normally be blowing coat all summer, spring and fall, has barely blown all year. I can't explain it except that the super mild winter, spring and colder fall, I think has his coat metabolism out of whack. I should have been stuffing cushions with Indy's butt hair by now, but nothing.....

Minnie was spayed when she was 9 months old. How often can I expect her to blow her coat? Also, we will be moving back to Singapore next year and it's a country with only summer all year round. Will she still blow her coat when there is no change in season? Minnie is born here in USA so I'm not sure what to expect.

The hair all over is something I wont mention here to the other half, if he imagines hair in his food or spitting out of his mouth I know I will have to answer 200 questions and since I am the one who uses the vac. and washes floor and brushes the cats I think he doesn't need to hear this about shelties.
It took me 2 years to go from his Lab to my sheltie ideas and a lot of lassie movies, collie calendars hanging, agility shows on animal planet, stories of intelligence and so on to gain the upper hand, I am not sharing poop shoots and hair in food stories, ssshhh. I do have to say the idea of a bald sheltie seems so sad.
Cleaning tips greatly appreciated. I have tile floors, that should help shouldn't it?

I grew up with Labs, my first on my own dog was a Lab and all my family still has Labs(yes I am the black sheep) and I can tell you NONE of my shelties shed like those Labs. It was awful.

Here is the thing short hair double coated breeds , nothing to hold in the undercoat and the top coat turns over faster. As long as you keep your sheltie brushed really the shedding is minimal except when they blow their coats which happens 1-2 times a year depending on the dog. Even then you see tuffing and the coat stays put until you brush it out.(unlike the Labs).

When it is coat blowing time you can minimize the length of the "blow" by brushing them out, give them a warm bath and then blowing them out with a forced air dryer(high velcity dryer like a groomer has-even if I wasn't showing I could never groom a sheltie without one) and then brushing them out. Usually 1-2 weeks and they are done. Birch blew all his remaining puppy coat a couple weeks ago in about 3-4 days and he is already growing more.

I spayed Ember at 2.5 yrs, she blew her coat the next month and then didn't blow it for 2.5 yrs. Now she blows her coat 1x a year. Justice has 1 big blow a year up until this year and he has blown his coat 2x times , stupid weather had them all messed up.

Is it only if they are blowing coat that you get hair everywhere blowing them with a force air dryer or all the time? I recently bought a forced air dryer and have done mine 3 times since I got it. Granted, I am still keeping it down fairly low (it has a variable speed switch) but I do not have hair blowing all over the place. I was assuming this was because they are well brushed out to start with. Should I be seeing fur flying?
