Sheltie ear tipping?

BTW, do any/many Shelties have "naturally tipped" ears that don't require any taping/gluing?

I got my boy when he was one year old. He had tipped ears, but when he got excited one ear would fly into the straight position - too cute.

Some do. It seems to be pretty random though and depends on their hair and ear leather. The breeder I got Ruutu from kept the two girls. She doesn't mess with ears at all. The litter is about to be 1 this Saturday and one has straight up ears, the other has perfect tipped ears. Their father also has perfect tipped ears, so maybe some genetics. She has their parents and grandparents as well. Ruutu's go straight up if I don't glue them. At almost a year though, they're staying pretty good. Not perfectly tipped, but tipped none the less.
 
I cant figure out where I occasionally get natural ears from..But in two litters, different sires I ended up with one in one litter, and 3 in the other litter didnt have to mess with their ears. Cant figure out if its the dam...which I suspect, or a combo of the breeding.

Missy's dam had ears that were prick despite taping and bracing. They would stay tipped for a couple days, then right back up. Her sire had beautiful ears. I figured I had a 50/50 chance of her having tipped ears... unfortunately she got her momma's ears.
 
Lucky lucky me my breeder has already taken care of the gluing.. Yay!!! Anyways, how long should I keep it on for the perfect tip?
 
You will not be saying Lucky Me when you find out how often they come unglued! You will however become expert in regluing them back down. My breeder says to glue till nearly a year and definitely until the weather is warm. I'm figuring I've got 4 or 5 months to go, they are staying glued longer so I am hoping that means they are conforming to being tipped.

Weird. definitely not the dam in my case that I know. His mommy got nice pointy big ears. His sire is tipped though.

:lol: Ruutu is a master at ungluing his ears... At first I had to reglue them within 3 days of gluing. And boy was I pouring glue on it. He got to the point where he'd leave them alone for a week then out they'd go. It took until he was 7 months to leave them alone for 3 weeks. 3 weeks has always been the max though. They say perfect is a year. Some get lucky and don't need that long. My parent's boy had perfect tipped ears by 5 months. You definitely want to leave them tipped though until done with teething.
