We have had our Sheltie for almost 4 months now and just love her to bits. We had been looking for a dog for a few years and had hoped to get a rescue dog from one of the local charities. However, as our son(8) was very nervous around large dogs (due to being frightened by a dog who just wanted to kiss him when he was 2) we soon realized that we needed a dog that we could roughly predict how big it would get and that would be good with kids.
After some research we settled on Shelties (mainly because i grew up a rescued border collie x
) and then my husband found a really nice breeder here in Alberta.
We brought our girl home when she was 14 weeks old and it took about 2 weeks for her to be house trained. The only accidents she had were down to me not paying enough attention to her little potty dance but she soon learned to bark at me when she needed to go. Other than that, she only barks when someone comes to the door or when my daughter (4) gets her over excited. Most of the time she is content to just follow me around like my shadow and will generally just settle down and go to sleep.
The biggest problems we have had are car sickness (which she seems to be getting over thanks to repeated car trips to the dog park) and herding. She often herds us when we are walking around the house and occasionally she will nip our ankles. This seems to be easing over time but I can honestly say that it isn't a surprise, seeing as she is a herding breed.
We have been so lucky to get her and I can't wait until the warmer weather arrives so that she can join the family on our trips to the mountains.
