So glad she has done so well and is now home again with her loving family. No doubt she will feel much better and perkier post-surgery. I would also like to know about her ears and if her hearing is improved.

Petunia's ear infections have cleared up a lot. She has been on oral antibiotics as well as ear drops. Foster Dad Mark believes she is completely deaf, though. She does bark sometimes with other dogs. It is unclear as to whether she was always deaf or if the infections caused the deafness, which is more likely the case. She was very happy last night when she returned to her foster home to see her bed though.

Sweet Petunia
Dear Amy, thank you SOOO much for letting us know how sweet little Petunia is doing. It is just wonderful to hear she is doing so well and is back home with her foster dads. I am so privileged to be a member of Sheltie Nation and know so many people are trying to help this sweet little Sheltie. God bless all of you. Can't wait to hear more about this sweetie-pie.

You are so very welcome! W/out Sheltie Nation, we might not have reached our goal and have been able to help this girl.... She sounds like quite a lovey. Her foster dads sure did miss her the 2+ days she was w/ the vet!

Petunia needs our prayers . . .
Hello All -
Miss Petunia, as most of you know, came into rescue a few weeks ago and was a mess; flea infestation and dermatitis with hair loss, ears so badly infected she cannot hear well, nails over grown curling under her paws making walking very uncomfortable, but worse of all, two big tumors coming out of her vulva. She needed surgery estimated to cost 3-$4,000 so we held a fundraiser and the outpouring of support for Petunia from total strangers was wonderful! She even had a donation from the Netherlands and Canada!
Petunia had surgery to remove her tumors last Wednesday and she came through great, like the little trooper she is! When I picked her up on Friday she left tail wagging and ready to move on. The nurse said "wow, she is so happy to see you!" And I laughed and replied ,"she doesn't even know me, she's just a real happy girl!" While I had her for the day she was very alert and interested in everything. Mark and Michael, two of our board members who have been fostering her since she came into rescue, report she is doing the same which is wonderful because before surgery she was sleeping around the clock and I think now that was due to all the discomfort she experienced walking around with these tumors.
Saturday night the surgeon called me with her biopsy reports. Sadly, her tumors did turn out to be cancerous which was a shock to the surgeon because tumors such as these that occur in this area are rarely cancerous. Also, the type of cancer she has - fibrosarcoma - is a bone cancer and usually occurs in canines legs leading to amputation. So they are surprised it showed up in this way.
In another week or so Petunia has to go back for suture removal. At that time we will speak to the oncologist about her option and prognosis. We will weigh everything and make a decision about what her next step will be. We are choosing to be optimistic and positive about everything! Petunia is about 9 or 10 years old and regardless of what the oncologist says, she is not in the situation any longer that allowed her to come to us in this horrid condition. She is clean, comfortable, in a foster home where is spoiled and loved, her tumors are gone and she feels great.
She is loved by so many people and is now a very lucky girl because of this. If there is anything that can be done for her that will give her a better prognosis but won't be too hard on her, we will do our best to make sure she has everything she needs for however long she is with us.
We will be looking for a forever home for Miss Petunia to live out her life in. She is an awesome girl with so much love to give. Everyone that meets her, falls in love with her. If a forever home cannot be found, she will remain a forever foster in a volunteers home for the remainder of her life. If so, we will be searching for monthly sponsors for her care. If you are interested in opening your home to Petunia to live out her life in or are interested in possibly sponsoring her, please contact me.
