Under shelter information they say that Lily was rescued from a dog auction after spending her life as a breeding bitch for a puppy mill.

We do have dog auctions here but they are for farmers looking for a working dogs mostly kelpies) and they are run together with the sheepdog trials.

I can see no other purpose for selling dogs at auction in such large numbers other than commercial reasons. That is a really sad state of affairs.

Hate to see these poor puppy mill mamas, after years of service being discarded. I'm so glad shelties aren't the target for puppy mill breeders here (yet).

Thanks. I read through the posts several times and I missed the part about the "auction".

I would agree that "auctions" sound a bit worrisome, its just that I hesitated to jump to a conclusion that they are all bad because I feel funny about the concept. It sounds like you are saying that auctions at the sheepdog trials are on the up and up. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
