Sheltie Puppy Coat - Giant wave?

Hi everyone! Sorry if this has been posted before, I tried a search and couldn't find the answer to what I was looking for.

My Sheltie puppy is 7 months old, I've had him since he was 11 weeks and I got him from a breeder. When I got him his coat was going in one direction, did this strange thing where he kinda looked like his coat was acting as a cap over his body but still in the same direction. I've noticed that in the last 3 months or so that his coat is going everywhere but he's been shedding less as well. His breeder mentioned that he would go through a "case of the uglies" and I was wondering if this was just that. I can't get it to go in one direction no matter how I brush and he has this giant wave thing going on. It's like a tsunami of sheltie fur washing across his back.

(He was neutered at 6 months if that helps)
 
We are going through the same shockingly shaggy phase. Estella's coat is a giant mess of waves at six months. She resembles a weird looking fox. I want her to have a big, luxurious sheltie coat but I think she may just end up a curly, shaggy mess.

She is such a sweet dog. We will love her even if she is a shaggy mess.
 
Looks like you've got a curly coat! Mr D has a kinky coat, it definitely got more manageable as the coat grew longer, but it didn't disappear. Sometimes it kinks more - if it's wet or he lays funny. A boars hair bristle brush does help with the kinks. Below is a pic of him at about the same age - kinks showing, and at 2yrs old, so you can see it does get better. I must say too, the kinks were a lot less noticeable when he lost weight.

Missy's coat is a little on the wavy side. She had a little kink/flip on her butt that drove me nuts for a month or so. I would try to brush it away and I wish I could say that worked, but I think it went away on its own due to her hair getting longer. It comes back for a few days when I bathe her, but it goes away eventually. Sooo annoying!
 
The swirls and waves and cowlicks just make me smile...sorry, not making fun. I know a sheltie that has them even with his adult coat, but usually they straighten out some. Sally has ends that flip up here and there. I love them !!:o
 
My Hanna is looking a little shaggy too right now - I think it will pass, but either way we love her to bits.
 
Thank you for all the replies, glad to see I'm not the only one and it should straighten out a little when it gets longer! Though his breeder did mention that Sully's dad didn't have a particularly long coat so we shall see how that turns out. Mr D looks absolutely beautiful! I can't wait for the full coat. :)
 
Laddie coat is long, it is parted in the center, but, LOL, certain areas around his ears are really curly, like someone curled them, when he is wet, certain areas of his coat all over are wavy, but when dry, it is fine, strange.

Don't worry sorts itself out given time. Remember a sheltie coat can take to between 2 to 3 years to reach maturity. Cheers, Dave
