I really wanted to go the rescue route. I always said that Pierre was our exception because got my DH out of his funk of not liking dogs. After that, I wanted to go rescue.
So I looked in to it. Most of the rescues here require fenced yards. It is Florida, though, so I'm not exactly sure why - you can't leave your dog in the yard for any length of time without being irresponsible. And I know that many people aren't, but I'm very active with my dogs (then, dog). We go out of the house all of the time - there are trails behind my house where they walk with me. A yard is an excuse not to exercise them yourself (many people prove this false, but I know others who think yard time is all they need).
After calling a few, I got very rude women who pretty much told me I wouldn't be taken seriously. (The one Judy [SunChaser - part of a brilliant group of caring people] works with was next on my list, but I didn't call because I had gotten three snubs. I was distraught and I'm not that great on the phone as it is. It is a shame, since her group is reasonable in that regard, apparently.)
So I went back to my breeder because I know she had Shelties (little knowing she had an adorable litter we couldn't refuse). If I could do it differently, I may have, but I love Duncan so much I wouldn't trade him for anything.
Good luck in your search. Don't let color be a factor. Listen to your gut and go with what feels right. And see if Smudge can meet him/her beforehand!!
For names: Blur or Mark? Would be really cute and not too matchy with Smudge.
